National Military Appreciation Month (NMAM) is celebrated every May and is a declaration that encourages U.S. citizens to observe the month in a symbol of unity. May is characterized by six national observances highlighting the contributions of those who have served. MAY 1: LOYALTY DAY MAY 7 — 13: PUBLIC SERVICE RECOGNITION WEEK MAY 8: VICTORY IN EUROPE DAY AKA V-E DAY OR VE DAY MAY 12: MILITARY SPOUSE APPRECIATION DAY MAY 20: ARMED FORCES DAY MAY 29: MEMORIAL DAY WAYS TO SUPPORT OUR MILITARY & VETERANS ★ Display the American Flag at your home ★ Send a care package to a soldier ★ Encourage elected officials at all levels to recognize our military and veterans ★ See someone in uniform or know a veteran? Thank them for their service or surprise them with a coffee, dessert or drink ★ Donate to a veteran or military charity ★ Reach out to a veteran or military family in need MILITARY APPRECIATION DANCE Stop by the HFC to reserve a table for the Military Appreciation Dance that will be held on May 12 from 7 to 10 pm at the HFC. $10 for a table reservation and $10 for admissions. It will be a night filled with music by DJ Wayne. Come show your appreciation for those who served and or continue to serve our country. It's also BYOB and snacks. LAVA GOLF TOURNAMENT The Third Annual Armed Forces Day Commander in Chief Golf Tournament will be held on May 20 at the Lake Ashton Golf Club. LAVA is again sponsoring this event to benefit veteran organizations as well as a local scholarship program. Sign-up sheets will be posted on the bulletin board in the Pro Shop. The tournament is open to all residents, and you can register as an individual or a group. At sign up you will be asked to affiliate with a branch of service. The cost for the event is $35 for residents with a golf membership, $40 for residents without a golf membership, and $50 for nonresidents. The fee includes golf, carts, prizes and lunch. Checks should be made payable to the Lake Ashton Golf Management. Questions on the tournament or sponsorship can be addressed to Bob Zelazny, Nancy Baker, or Jim Mecsics. VETERANS — ENJOY A FREE PATRIOTIC CONCERT! There will be a concert on Saturday, May 27 at 7 pm in the Clubhouse Ballroom featuring The Summit Kings playing patriotic music, along with other classic hits. If you would like to have your military photo displayed at the event, please bring it to the Clubhouse Activities Office by 5 pm on May 19. All Lake Ashton military veterans will be given a free ticket to this event thanks to our sponsor Melissa Kincaid of Edward Jones. Tickets will be $5 for anyone else who would like to attend. Pick up or purchase at the Clubhouse Activities Office. CEREMONY AT THE VETERANS MEMORIAL Everyone is invited to gather at the Veterans Memorial by the Clubhouse at 9 am on Monday, May 29 for a remembrance ceremony facilitated by the Lake Ashton Veterans Association (LAVA).
