MIND&BODY LIVING WELL At any age, there are lifestyle habits we can adopt to help maintain or even potentially improve our health. These habits may also help to keep our brains healthy as we age and possibly delay the onset of cognitive decline. To help people age well, the Alzheimer’s Association is offering a program on May 5 at 10 am in the Clubhouse Ballroom entitled Healthy Living for Your Brain and Body: Tips from the Latest Research. This workshop covers four areas of lifestyle habits associated with healthy aging: • Cognitive activity • Physical health and exercise • Diet and nutrition • Social engagement Sign up at the Clubhouse Information Wall Save the Date: 10 Warning Signs of Alzheimer’s and Dementia on June 9. EATING THE MEDITERRANEAN WAY Join Andrea from UF/IFAS on May 18 at 1 pm in the Clubhouse Ballroom to learn how to improve your health by eating the Mediterranean way! Learn the basics of the Mediterranean diet and then enjoy a food presentation as we cook up a heart-healthy and tasty Mediterranean meal. Sign up at the Clubhouse Information Wall. AMERICAN S IGN LANGUAGE CLASSES Growing older can come with different degrees of hearing loss, and it is important for your brains to remain active no matter the effects of aging. Learning American Sign Language (ASL) can help with both! If you are not aware of the ASL classes held at Lake Ashton, why don’t you come check the group out? Classes are held Tuesday afternoons at 2 pm in the Clubhouse Ballroom. The group has been meeting every week since last spring and have learned so much thanks to the wonderful instructors James, and Helen. Furthermore, beginning September 6, there will be a beginning class of ASL in the Clubhouse Ballroom at 1 pm. Sign up by emailing ShelleyKnee@gmail.com. This class will start with simply learning the alphabet and numbers along with common words and easy phrases. This will be geared to the beginner who has no experience. Some fun games will be planned to learn by experience and communication with other deaf and hearing impaired neighbors. It’s best if you attend with a partner so you learn together and can communicate with each other and practice on your own. If you have experience, you’re invited to attend the advanced class in the Ballroom at 2 pm every Tuesday. May 10 is the last class before the summer break, resuming September 6.
