National Military Appreciation Month (NMAM) is celebrated every May and is a declaration that encourages U.S. citizens to observe the month in a symbol of unity. NMAM honors current and former members of the U.S. Armed Forces, including those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the pursuit of freedom. It was introduced in 1999 by Sen. John McCain and encourages Americans to reflect on the sacrifices made by all current and former military personnel. May is characterized by six nat iona l obser vances h igh l ight i ng the contributions of those who have served: Loyalty Day (May 1) Public Service Recognition Week (May 1-7) Victory in Europe Day (V-E Day or VE Day May 8) Military Spouse Appreciation Day (May 6) Armed Forces Day (May 21) Memorial Day (May 30). WAYS TO SUPPORT MILITARY & VETERANS • Display the American Flag at your home • Purchase a bow from the LAVA Auxiliary • Send a care package to a soldier • Encourage elected officials to recognize military and veterans • Thank someone in uniform or a veteran by surprising them with a special treat • Donate to a veteran or military charity • Reach out to a veteran or military family in need JOHNNY WILD & THE DELIGHTS will pay tribute to veterans on May 6 w i t h S T A R S & STRIPES, a stirring evening of patriotic m u s i c , c o m e d y , pe r f o rmance and spectacle. Showtime is at 7 pm. Tickets are available for purchase at the Clubhouse Activities Desk for $25 for premium seating and $20 for regular seating. All seating is cabaret style. LAKE ASHTON VETERANS ASSOCIATION (LAVA) UPCOMING EVENTS By Jim Mecsics The LAKE ASHTON VETERANS ASSOCIATION (LAVA) AND AUXILIARY, in coordination with the staff are sponsoring various activities to show our community’s support. A MILITARY MOVIE MARATHON will be held at the Clubhouse Cinema throughout the month, depicting the Nation’s heroes as they defend freedom throughout history. See pages 20-21. LAVA and Cornerstone Hospice will SALUTE ALL LAKE VETERANS AT MONDAY COFFEE on May 2 at 0900 hrs. (9 am). Each veteran will be presented a special pin and certificate as well as cake being served for everyone. Veterans must have pre-registered in order to be recognized. The 2ND ANNUAL LAVA COMMANDER IN CHIEF GOLF TOURNAMENT will be held on Armed Forces Day, May 21, at the Lake Ashton Golf Course. Proceeds for this go to supporting local veterans’ programs. You can register for this outstanding event at the golf pro shop. LAVA wi l l conduc t a MEMORIAL DAY CEREMONY on May 30 at the Veterans Memorial at 0900 hrs. (9 am). The entire Lake Ashton community is invited to this event that honors those who have given the ultimate sacrifice for our country. As is the tradition in our great community, LAVA will line both entrances, the Clubhouse and Health and Fitness Center with US flags and challenges all to line their residences as well. LAVA will be selling flags (at cost) at coffees and special sales (to be announced). Lake Ashton takes pride in its patriotism and support for “hometown heroes” and armed service which include active duty, reserves and National Guard. Let’s show the world that Lake Ashton appreciates and supports the armed forces and veterans. God Bless America and God Bless Our Troops!
