NATIONAL MILITARY APPRECIATION MONTH (NMAM) is celebrated every May and is a declaration that encourages U.S. citizens to observe the month in a symbol of unity. NMAM honors current and former members of the U.S. Armed Forces, including those who made the ultimate sacrifice i n t h e pursuit of freedom. NMAM started as a simple idea; to gather America around its military family to honor, remember, recognize and appreciate those who have served and those now serving and to know the history behind it all. May is characterized by six national observances highlighting the contributions of those who have served. LOYALTY DAY — SATURDAY, MAY 1, 2021 This is a day set aside for the reaffirmation of loyalty to the United States, and to reflect on the proud heritage of our American freedom. PUBLIC SERVICE RECOGNITION WEEK (PSRW) — MAY 2 THROUGH 8, 2021 The first full week in May is set aside to honor the men and women who serve our nation as federal, state, county and local government employees and ensure that our government is the best in the world. MILITARY SPOUSE APPRECIATION DAY FRIDAY, MAY 7, 2021 Traditionally set for the Friday before Mother’s Day, this is a day to honor military spouses with appropriate ceremonies and activities. Recognizes the important role our military families play in keeping the Armed Forces strong and the country safe. VICTORY IN EUROPE DAY (V-E DAY) SATURDAY, MAY 8, 2021 May 8th, 1945 is the day when Germans throughout Europe uncondit ional ly surrendered to the Allies. This day marked the end of World War II in Europe. ARMED FORCES DAY SATURDAY, MAY 15, 2021 Celebrated the third Saturday in May every year, this is a single holiday for citizens to come together and thank our military members for their patriotic service in support of this country. This day honors everyone serving in all the U.S. Military branches: Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines, Navy, Space Force. MEMORIAL DAY MONDAY, MAY 31, 2021 A Federal holiday observed on the last Monday in May to commemorate the men and women who died while in military service. All Americans are encouraged to pause, wherever they are, at 3 pm local time for a minute of silence. WAYS TO SUPPORT MILITARY & VETERANS • Display the American Flag at your home • Send a care package to a soldier • Encourage elected officials to recognize military and veterans • Thank someone in uniform or a veteran by surprising them with a special treat • Donate to a veteran or military charity • Reach out to a veteran or military family in need • During the month of May residents can stop by the Wall of Honor in the Clubhouse Foyer to place a picture with the branch of service for themselves or family members that are veterans, on active duty, or made the ultimate sacrifice. Any veterans who would like a picture taken by staff can stop by the Clubhouse Activities Desk Monday-Thursday from 10 am — 3 pm. • Throughout the month of May the HFC will be recognizing Lake Ashton Veterans with special media highlighting a Lake Ashton Veteran weekly, and trivia to test your knowledge of the United States Armed Forces.
