MARDI GRAS PERFORMANCE By Gina Krall Lake Ashton was well represented at the Lake Wales Mardi Gras parade on February 18. This charity event draws crowds of 8,000 to 10,000 every year. Our crew was one of the largest in the parade, comprising of six men carrying three banners, 16 LA Shakers and 6 Ashtonettes. Entertainer Diana Lynn belted out "When the Saints Go Marching In" and "All that Jazz" from the back our our decorated float truck encouraging the revealers to join her in merriment. LA TRIVIA - TIME CHANGE! By David Fix Trivia will be held March 5 from 4 to 6 pm in the Ballroom. Maximum number of players per team is eight. Individuals can join an open table. $1/person to play with money returned to the top three teams. Three rounds of 10 questions will be played along with one final bonus question. BYOB! BYOSnacks! RELAY FOR LIFE The LA Purple Stars are selling luminary bags and tea lights for a minimum donation of $10 at both Activities Desks. Decorate the bag to remember family members or friends you have lost to cancer or someone still fighting this disease, or a survivor. Return the bags to any LA Purple Stars member or either Activities Desk by noon on March 10. Residents are invited to join the Walk For A Cure at 6 pm on March 10 in the Clubhouse West parking lot to walk around the golf cart path, past the pavilion and back to the Clubhouse circle to view all the luminary bags. Any questions, call David Harrison 863-326-6418. CHILI COOK-OFF WRAP-UP REPORT A good time was had by all at the annual Chili Cook Off January 20 in the Clubhouse Ballroom. There were 17 chilis, cornbread, baked goods and bottled water for all. Over 120 people came to sample the chili and support the LA Purple Stars. Five judges did a blind tasting of the chilis and picked two winners. First place winner George Fetcho received a $50 Publix gift card, and second place winner Dan Freedman received a $25 Publix gift card. Thank you to all who donated, cooked, and helped to setup and volunteered. With your help, $3,000 was raised for the American Cancer Society!
