COOK I NG S A F E TY By James Schuppe, LA CERT Kitchen/cooking fires are the number one cause of fires in the home. Being watchful and alert while cooking can prevent burns and fires from occurring or getting out of hand. Never leave your home while you are cooking especially when frying, boiling, or broiling food. Turn pot handles inward to prevent knocking pots off the stove causing burns or fire. Keep loose items away from burners including any loose clothing you might be wearing. And finally keep a lid close by in case a fire in your pot should occur. Cover the pot with the lid, smothering the fire. However, NEVER attempt to put the fire out yourself if it’s out of control. Get out of the house calmly first and then dial 911. 18
