SAFET Y NEIGHBORHOOD WAT CH 2021 NATIONAL NIGHT OUT By Fay Wood, NW Chief National Night Out is an annual communitybui lding campaign that promotes pol icecommunity partnerships and neighborhood cama r ader i e to make the Lake Ashton neighborhood a safer, more caring place to live. This year the Lake Ashton National Night Out will be held on August 3. A golf cart parade/caravan will take place at 7:30 pm starting at the HFC going throughout the community and ending at the Clubhouse. All Lake Ashton residents are asked to keep their outside lights on to signify their commitment to a crime-free environment! Help make this National Night Out a special one and hopefully all of the community will participate! SAFET Y IN THE SUMMER By Fay Wood, NW Chief Summer is here, but these tips are pertinent all year long. It’s never too early to start sprucing up crime prevention activities at home. Always better safe than sorry! • Trim trees and bushes around your home (windows and doors should be clear and visible from the street). Lock pet doors unless in use by your pet. • Consider purchasing a safe for cash and jewelry (only give location to trusted people) • Avoid home-improvement scams (door-to-door solicitors are not allowed and should never be let inside your home. Always ask for identification - check references before agreeing to repairs). • Don’t announce vacation plans on social media! Post pictures after you return. You never know who sees your announcements. • Let your NW Coordinator and/or Captain know you will be away so they can keep extra eyes and ears on your property. 16 LIGHTNING SAFET Y Lake Ashton has a lightning detection system to alert golfers to get off the course, and notify all residents to go indoors when the potential for a lightning strike is in the area. When the system senses a lightning danger, a high-pitched siren sounds and strobe lights turn on and stay on until the danger passes. These strobe lights are at various locations including on top of the Clubhouse, the backside of the HFC and the boat dock on Lake Ashton. A low-pitched horn will sound all clear and the strobe lights will turn off when lightning has passed. Be safe — lightning strikes may occur far away from a visible storm. Get out of pools, do not stand under trees, and get indoors when the siren sounds. Remember — golf carts are not safe from lightning. DRIVE SAFELY! Polk County Schools start back August 10. Please use caution when traveling CR 653 during school opening and closing times. All vehicles, including golf carts, must obey all stop signs and the 20 mph speed limit throughout Lake Ashton. Drivers, watch for pedestrians at all times. Obeying posted speed limit and traffic signs can help avert a potential tragedy.
