NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH By Fay Wood, NW Chief Summer is just around the corner. These tips are pertinent all year long. It’s never too early to start sprucing up crime prevention activities at home. • Trim trees and bushes around your home (windows and doors should be clear and visible from the street). Lock pet doors unless in use by your pet (this convenient open door can let burglars have access to your home). • Consider purchasing a heavy safe for cash and jewelry (only give location to trusted people). • Avoid home-improvement scams (door-to-door solicitors should never be let inside your home). Ask for identification and check references before agreeing to repairs. • Don’t announce vacation plans on social media (post pictures after you return). • Let a neighbor friend and your area NW Coordinator know you will be away so they can keep extra eyes and ears on your property. Always better safe than sorry! 21
