RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT: BETTY DAVENPORT By Marianne Zak Meet 93-year-old Betty Davenport of Coconut Palms. Raised in Michigan on a farm, Betty enjoyed 4H and was "Dairy Queen"! Her mother/teacher taught her in a one room schoolhouse. She still cherishes her "Dick and Jane" primer. Graduating college she taught school for forty-three years. She married Jerry Qualman and enjoyed five children. After his passing she met widower Captain Jack 13 Davenport who was raising seven children. Their blended family of twenty-seven grandchildren and fifty great grandchildren gather here every year for a cheesecake contest. Jack recently passed in 2024 at one-hundred and two. As past president of the Florida Women's Republican Club, Betty met and supported Senators and Governors. She has been to Mar Lago and met Donald Trump. A pioneer in teaching learning disabled youngsters, she was instrumental in creating statewide programs for special needs children. Betty moved to Lake Ashton in 2006 and is a member of High Point Church and Lake Ashton Republican Club. THE MURRAY ZACHARIA MEDIA CENTER In October 2019 the Clubhouse Media Center was dedicated to Murray Zacharia. A plaque and a few pictures put up by friends and family can be found in the Media Center. Stop by and take a moment to remember a friend and neighbor who made it his mission to advocate for the community he loved. Murray's dedication and commitment to making Lake Ashton "Simply the Best" was exceptional. He is missed every day by those that knew him and will forever be in our hearts. While in the Murray Zacharia Media Center be sure to take a look at the new publications available to residents. Some are available to take home and others, such as the newspapers, should be left for others to enjoy. There are puzzles, new books coming in everyday, and much more.
