ARMED FORCES DAY GOLF TOURNAMENT By Jim Mecsics Photos by Dale Steenberg The Lake Ashton Veterans Association (LAVA) sponsored the inaugural Armed Forces Day Commander-in-Chief Golf Tournament on May 15, 2021. Thirty-six teams competed for individual prizes, with the winning service claiming the Commander-in-Chief Trophy. Thank everyone who participated in the event, sponsored a hole, or just donated to this worthy endeavor. Through your generosity, LAVA will be able to expand their support for such meaningful projects as Freedom Flights, K9s for veterans, aid to homeless veterans, Wreaths Across America, support for deployed soldiers, and scholarships. The event started with the Pledge of Allegiance, led by Commander Jim Mecsics, and ended with the awarding of prizes for a putting contest, a driving accuracy contest, four closest-to-the-pin competitions, as well as the possibility of winning a new Chevrolet Equinox, along with enjoying some great golf. A hearty lunch and cash bar was provided for participants by the Eagles Nest. The winners of the Commander-in-Chief Trophy for 2021 is the United States Air Force with each member receiving an inaugural challenge coin. Thank you, Lake Ashton, for your generosity and patriotism!
