LAMGA By David Kubissa Robert Whittington is a relatively new LAMGA member, having moved into Lake Ashton with wife Penny last July. But it didn’t take long for his skills to make his name known among the LAMGA members as he competed in the black/gold tee division. Then came the club championship in March 2026 when, amid winds reaching 20 mph or more, Robert shot a twoday total of 157 to win the Championship Division by five strokes and the title of Overall Men’s Club Champion. For that feat, he received first prize and a reserved golf cart parking spot with his name – at least until next year’s championship. A retiree from the housing construction business, Robert was born and raised in Mississippi and Louisiana and spent most of his adult life in northern Virginia. Here, in his own words, is more information about his golf game. How old were you when you played your first round of golf? When and where was it? I was in my mid-30s when I played at Fairfax National Golf Course in Centreville, VA in 1997. How did you develop your golfing skills to be what they are now? I pounded a lot of balls at the driving range. What other club championships or tournaments have you won? Gauntlet Golf Club in Fredericksburg, VA – Club Championship. Kastle Greens in Midland, VA – Club Championship. Windswept Dunes Golf Club in Freeport, FlL – Club Championship (twice). I also won multiple scramble tournaments in Virginia. Lake Ashton’s narrow fairways can be a challenge to new members. How did you adjust to them? I’m still adjusting! It’s not about how far you hit the ball; it’s about keeping the ball in play. 38 Sponsor salute — LAMGA thanks the following businesses and services for their support: Boyett Family Dentistry; Brad Kirwan, Realtor; Brewer Sales and Service; Brock’s Window Cleaning; Central Door Company; Chiroworks; Christine Graves Insurance, Inc.; Citizens Bank & Trust. MESSAGE FROM THE PRO SHOP By Kevin Baker, General Manager Happy 250th Anniversary, America! I hope everyone is enjoying a wonderful summer here at Lake Ashton. Thank you to everyone who has participated in our three-part Orange Whip program. The response has been tremendous. Many golfers have improved their balance, consistency, and overall enjoyment of the game. Several participants have reported increased confidence on the course and are playing some of their best golf in years. Some residents may have stepped away from the game because of physical challenges or inconsistent play, and this program is designed to help golfers get back and enjoy the game again. The program focuses heavily on balance, flexibility, and proper movement patterns, which not only benefit your golf swing but can also help with everyday activities and overall wellness. With the Summer Golf Membership Program, residents receive unlimited golf and unlimited use of our practice facilities through September 30 for just $1,000. Anyone who joins the Summer Membership Program will receive a 50% credit ($500) that can be used for 2027’s membership fees. The continued success of Lake Ashton Golf Club is driven by the support of our residents. Club members play a vital role in maintaining and enhancing the golf experience that makes our community so special. To learn more about these programs, please stop by the Pro Shop.
