Nelson Fifteen years ago, on Thursday, January 8, 2004, I accepted the title of editor and challenged myself to successfully promote a new concept developed by The Commercial Appeal called the Whitehaven Appeal. The Whitehaven Appeal, later renamed the Whitehaven and Southeast Memphis Appeal, was an insert that was placed in The Commercial Appeal newspapers that was provided for free to individuals residing in ZIP Codes 38109 and 38116 in an attempt to boost readership with communityfocused content. In creating this online newsletter, it is our goal to improve on what we once had. We understand that communication is key to everything, so we want to grow an online audience and be the first place to look when you want to find out what is or has happened in Whitehaven and other communities. Of course all of this depends on you. Your readership, your willingness to share online links to featured stories to create new viewers like yourself, your willingness to submit events that are scheduled to happen as well as pictures and stories about things which have recently taken place, and your ability to support us through advertisements featuring local businesses and activities. The 2018 Inaugural Whitehaven Holiday Marketplace The Inaugural iLoveWhitehaven Weekend was held from 11 AM– 3PM on Saturday, November 17, 2018 Organized by Pearl Walker, owner and founder of Legacy Locs and Natural Styles beauty and hair salon, the first “I Love Whitehaven” weekend featuring the Whitehaven Holiday Marketplace was launched in November 2018. “Thanks to Community Lift, I applied for the Community Lift grant and I received it,” said Walker. “Centered around the city of Memphis Christmas Parade at Whitehaven, the marketplace is designed to compliment the weekend of activities and different things going on in Whitehaven with a place for vendors to sell goods.” The Memphis Christmas Parade in Whitehaven, formerly known as the Holiday Festival Parade, began in 1998 under the direction of beautician Hazel Moore, founder of the Academy for Youth Empowerment. Designed to build a stronger community, the parade has expanded into a Winterfest weekend that begins with the annual Christmas lighting ceremony at Graceland on Friday and concludes with a church choir concert on Sunday. “Piggy-backing on Saturday’s parade, we’re doing the Holiday Marketplace on the parking lot of Whitehaven Plaza,” said Walker. “We want the people who come to Whitehaven to watch the parade to stay afterwards to patronize the food trucks, vendors, and visit with area businesses.
