SEPTEMBER 18, 2026 ON MY CORNER MEET YOUR VENDOR Highway to Heaven I love to watch the TV show Highway to Heaven still, even though it was on back in the 1980s. It stars Michael Pony Bush, Groundcover vendor No. 305 In one sentence, who are you? Myself. I’m just me. Where do you usually sell Groundcover? Downtown Ann Arbor — Literati most often. If you were a character from a movie, book and/or TV show, who would you be and why? Denzel Washington in "Training Day." If you could travel back in time, what time period would you travel back to and why? The 80s — the younger days when I was in high school. If you could live anywhere in the world for a year, where would it be? California or Florida. Or Amsterdam! If you could choose any two famous people to have dinner with, who would they be? Dolly Parton before she died and Beyonce. If you had to teach a class on one thing, what would you teach? Homelessness. How to survive, and educate people who have never been homeless on what it's like. Tell us about a person who changed your life in some way. Panda (Cindy Gere)! She got me with Groundcover. What was your happiest memory from the past year? I did lots of good sales at Ypsi Pride and the Ann Arbor Art Fair this summer. What would your entrance song be? The Rocky theme song. Describe your perfect day. Making money (good paper sales). Nice weather, listening to good music. Landon and Victor French, and anything with them is good I think. Highway to Heaven is a show about a guardian angel on probation that gets to live on earth and help people. It is very inspirational and funny. Having it on is very relaxing and it is about God and Jesus too. It helps you think about things differently. It also is comforting and soothing. It can relax you so much that you go to sleep while it's on when you are tired, and it's also good to watch when you are grieving or sad about something. It portrays different life situations and it also helps you deal with people passing away because it is about people going to heaven DENISE SHEARER Groundcover vendor No. 485 when they pass away. I think it is a show about loving people and helping people, and I believe God and Jesus are about love and helping people and comforting people who are hurting. It is also beautiful with pretty scenery and beautiful clothes that people used to wear in the 80s. It would be nice to have an up-to-date version of Highway to Heaven because I believe that both of the stars have went to Heaven and we need some new earthly actors to play the new roles. I think people would really enjoy the original version of the show, and a new version of the show. That’s what I think is enjoyable about the 80s TV show Highway to Heaven. Editor’s note: There is a reboot of Highway to Heaven in the works! It is currently planned for the 2027-28 season, and involves Michael Landon Productions. Planning ahead: 1, 2, 3, 4, Lunar The future lies before us. What are the next events that speak to us? For some of us, International Day of Peace on Sunday, September 20, looms large now. For years it was held on the Community Commons next to the Ann Arbor District Library. That lot was privatized by a special election so the city cannot issue a permit. This year it will be at Libery Plaza from 1-5 p.m. See more details in the Community Events calendar on page 5. The next event on my mind is my 84th birthday, which will be celebrated Sunday, October 11, about Hiroshima and the survivor who researched the 12 American POWs who died in the atomic bomb blast. In November, Vets for KEN PARKS Groundcover vendor No. 490 from 4-7 p.m. at Friends Meeting House,1420 Hill St., Ann Arbor. We are planning a potluck social gathering with a documentary, “Paper Lanterns,” at 6 p.m. It is a story Peace will have the Arlington Michigan display at Veterans Park. Winter solstice and Christmas are the celebrations of the shortest day of the year and confidence that the sun will return. The Light of the world is born again. Of the Lunar New Year celebrations both Tết and Losar are February 5. Losar is Tibetan New Year, and Karuna Buddhist Center will have a series of events which will be detailed on their website (karunabuddhistcenter.org/). Tết is Vietnamese New Year and is famous for the Tết offensive of 1968 which began the end of the War in Vietnam. Americans lost faith in the war and Lyndon Johnson did not run for reelection. There are some wonderful Vietnamese in Ann Arbor. Let’s recognize them at Tết and Losar. Grant your blessings that all these events bring us an experience of awakening and the all good expanse of primordial purity which is the mother of everything! GROUNDCOVER NEWS 3
