JULY 10, 2026 DUNBAR TOWER MIKE JONES Groundcover vendor No. 113 Imagine you find yourself unhoused. Imagine trying to create when displaced and constantly on the move. Imagine having all these artistic visions in your head but not being able to manifest them because you are too occupied with basic survival.This often happens to people who find themselves unhoused; their artistic talents go unused, not allowing that individual to thrive, but only to survive. The Dunbar Towers is located at 121 Catherine on the northwest corner of 4th Avenue and Catherine Street in Ann Arbor, and has 63 living units, with half the apartments for people experiencing homelessness and half geared toward low-income artists and other creative types. It is now the new home for former unhoused and low-income individuals to create and thrive, and to honor the city’s Black Cindy Gere Both stores where my art is displayed are in the Ypsi area. Founded in 1923, the Dunbar Community Center was named after the renowned African-American poet and novelist Paul Laurence Dunbar. The Center initially provided housing for Black railroad workers and students before becoming a vital social and cultural hub for the city's Black community. The Dunbar Towers were built on the former location of the Center to honor that history. The Old Fourth Ward and Ann St./Fourth Ave. Historic Districts was a predominantly Black neighborhood centered around several Black-owned businesses for most of the twentieth century.
