PRESIDENT’S WELCOME Welcome to Eccles Rugby Football Club A warm welcome to all the teams playing at Eccles RFC this weekend, it seems a long time since we have seen a proper match. This is officially our 124th anniversary and although we’ve only played here at Gorton Street for the last 74 years we’ve always had our home in this community. One of the great things about our club is our inclusivity; teams for Mini’s, Juniors, Girls, Colts, Ladies and Men means you can come down to the club Saturday or Sunday and be entertained. At Eccles RFC we place great importance on developing youth and I’m particularly looking forward to seeing some of our talented Home-Grown colts stepping up to play in the seniors this coming year alongside our new recruits. It has been a strange year with everything that has been going on but the club has still been extremely busy. The money we raised through Crowdfunder, £40K+, has put us in an exciting position to commence several ground improvement projects, that we hope will be complete by Christmas. The club would also like to thank all the volunteers for their dedicated effort. We’d not be able to operate without their contributions. I can’t name all them all as I am limited to one page, but you all know who you are. The club would also like to thank their sponsors as the financial support you contribute greatly helps with maintaining our facilities and activities. We can offer something for everyone including ‘Walking Rugby’ on Monday nights at 7pm which, for those who’d like to give it a try, has no age, gender, or ability limitations. Once again, welcome to the club and please enjoy your day. Our clubhouse bar is CAMRA award-winning and (for those over the age of 18) I’m informed has a fine selection of match refreshment, especially with our new friends from the First Chop Brewery. Mark Dutton // Eccles RFC President

CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME A warm welcome to all our supporters and visitors at Eccles RFC today. At long last, after an 18-month suspension, it's great to finally have competitive Rugby fixtures back at Gorton Street, and not just one match to enjoy, but two! Our 1XV men will be looking to build on their positive start last Saturday at Ormskirk with a home victory in the ADM premier Division against West Park St Helens. I was especially proud of the youthful first team that took to the field last week, many of them former colts who I’ve had the pleasure of coaching, now stepping up to pull on for their first taste of senior rugby in an Eccles shirt. As we return from the disruption of Covid I’m sure many North West clubs will find that they are missing many experienced names from their team sheets and facing a weekly struggle to raise teams. Let's hope our rugby community is able to recover by attracting players back to the game. Here at Eccles, it’s an exciting time for us as we look to the fruits of our own deep rooted well established junior section to become the future home-grown talent of the club. The blending of youth and experience will also be a feature of our new 2XV team this season. Today the Eccles 2s will face Manchester Rugby Club who I am sure will provide a strong challenge for the points. Regardless of the results I look forward to seeing you all in the bar after the match, where you can enjoy a glass of first class ale from our match sponsor and local brewer First Chop. I hope you enjoy your match experience here today and you keep returning throughout the season to support our teams. All players (and referees) enjoy encouragement from the touchline. Please be generous with your appreciation. All things prosper with effort. Let’s get stuck in! Chris Gaffey // Eccles RFC Chairman

HEAD COACH NOTES A very warm welcome to everyone visiting Gorton Street today. Eccles RFC play host to both West Park St Helens and Manchester Rugby Club for fixtures at 1st & 2nd team levels so we’ve a real action-packed afternoon ahead for you all. Eccles 1XV will be looking to build on last Saturday’s first half display against against Ormskirk, to guide them to a second win at the start of the 2021/22 season against today’s opposition West Park, who will be hoping to improve themselves after last weekend's defeat to our South Manchester neighbours Didsbury Toc H. Our 2XV team welcome Manchester 2s and injured Captain John Hibbert will be looking for a more consistent performance from his men after a strong first-half last weekend against Bowdon where Eccles lead 0-7 at the break. The Eccles men deserve credit for playing short a man for the full 40 against a Bowdon 15 with a revolving door of replacements and as fatigue set into the Eccles’s men’s legs late on the hosts were inevitably able to pile on the points resulting in a scoreline that didn’t fully reflect the game. The start of the season has been far from ideal, with Holidays, Music Festivals, injuries and other commitments all influencing player availability, preparation and team selection. However the strength in depth has been really good to see, especially from our young men stepping up to not only pull on the 1st XV shirt but actually make a significant contribution to the team success on the pitch. A mention here must go out to our former colts Jay Christey, Ryley Thornton, Daniel Reed, Tallis Keeler and Oliver White who in their first season of senior rugby have contributed hugely with their personal performances. # Homegrown Sam Simpson // Eccles RFC Director Of Rugby

SOCIAL EVENTS Over the weekend of 20th to 22nd August, the club hosted the 10th Annual Eccles Beer & Gin Festival. With every Salford brewery represented, attendees were met with a dazzling array of cask ales, porters, stouts and ciders plus 40 different options of Gin for their approval. Friday night started things off with a 'meet the brewer' event, when our primary sponsor and neighbour, First Chop, sent down 3 of their brewers to talk us through production of their wonderful range and Salford Live broadcast an interview with Martin, Dave, James and Rowanne to the socialsphere on all things Eccles RFC. On Saturday, Chris and Don organised the inaugural '100 Years of Hoops’ Mens Rugby Tournament. With teams represented from the four quarters of our wonderful County. Leigh defeated Vale of Lune in a closely contested final to be the first winners of the cossetted trophy, the Eccles (Bucket) Cup! Our 'homegrown' musicians Moonlight Rumours lit up the Saturday evening, with their eclectic take on modern classics, (their words, not mine)!, as the record crowd found its dancing feet to bring a very successful and enjoyable day 2 to a conclusion, despite the rain. Sunday morning saw families turn up for one of Marie's famous brekkos. They were joined by a number of Saturday attendees, bleary eyed and a little the worse for wear, to enjoy a family fun day culminating in a cricket match involving kids, adults and numerous dogs ! What a weekend! Close to being our best ever Festival. We began with 21 firkins of beer in the cellar and were left with just over 1 firkin! Special thanks to all our sponsors, in particular First Chop, and our very small army of hard working volunteers. Well done and good health to Martin, Marie, Hilary and team who co-ordinated a well-oiled machine to deliver a seamless event to the well-oiled! Next year is the club’s 125th anniversary, so event planning is already underway for a really big one! Dave Nicholls // Eccles RFC Hon. Secretary

ECCLES JUNIORS The mighty Minis & Juniors returned on Sunday morning in the glorious sunshine at Gorton Street. Building on the successes of the 20/21 season, our Mini managers and coaches welcomed 40 little people onto our awesome AstroTurf facilities and much fun was had! This included 13 brand new members to the club, forming our new under 5s team and next crop of talent. The U7s and 8s boasted 37 players in week 1 and an extended coaching team this season. Welcome to Sam and Lloyd who were introduced to old favourites 'Chasing Tails' and 'Rolling Rocks! They then dived straight into game-based play and competed across 4 pitches as we prepare Gorton Street to become the fortress of tag rugby once again. The U9s, 10s and 11s boasted some eager new members and set about re-learning to tackle. The 'Tower of Power' settled the boys back into some old habits and tackle techniques. Welcome to coach Judo John here. Many new members left munching hot dogs and boasting 'Trainer of the Week' medals glinting in the midday sun. Building on their Summer training camp, our 12s and 13s boys and girls were practicing the principles of game-based play whilst enjoying a tackling skills zone around wrapping the arms and chopping in the tackle. Our U14s boys are looking dangerous after working on some technicalities of the scrum and mirroring some of the 1st team backs move - watch this space! Finally, our U16s notched up an impressive 24-5 pre-season win against Heaton Moor under our Friday night lights! A big statement at the beginning of a big season for them. See you in week 2! Daniel Nicholls // Eccles RFC Mini & Junior Chairman

ECCLES COLTS Junior Colts The sun was shining on the first outing this season for the under 17s as they travelled to face the combined force of Glossop & Marple. Struggling for numbers, full credit must go to the hosts who loaned players to Eccles so a meaningful game could take place. Eccles started well and showed great organisation and resilience in the face of some constant early pressure. Although Glossop scored early in the first quarter the match stayed at 7-0 for the majority of the first half, which finished with a fantastic solo effort from Matthew Reed 7-5. In the second half Glossop & Marple took the upper hand and scored four unanswered tries but the score in no way reflected the fantastic effort Eccles continued to put in. Which culminated in two ventures into the oppositions red zone which were brilliantly defended from two definite tries for Akeal Stewart. In the final quarter of the game Eccles finally got their just deserts with an amazing try from Finley Whitworth who had constantly broken the defence of a tiring Glossop and Marple. Eccles finished the stronger side with some huge tackles being put in right up to the final whistle; Tom Kemp certainly left his mark but unfortunately the final score was 36-10 in favour of Glossop and Marple. There were certainly some great signs of quality rugby which certainly inspires confidence of a successful season ahead. Senior Colts Eccles showed their attacking intent from the whistle and opened the scoring 6 mins in with a try from Henry Dutton and appeared to be in control of the game until they gifted a penalty in the middle of park, leading to a kick to the corner and the Sale forwards drive over to even the score. The remainder of the half continued to be played in Sale territory with Eccles failing to turn their possession and dominance into points. Eccles started the second half on fire, determined to cut out their own errors and increase the pressure on the Sale defence. Eccles played some great front foot rugby and attacked with agression. Tries from Louis and Duncan, converted by Will B pressed home the advantage. Fullback Henry was smashed in a tackle and left the field for treatment, Sale went on to score a try late in the game, but of no consequence to the result when Will B slotted a penalty to secure the W. Excting committed rugby and a well deserved victory for the senior colts who worked hard in the heat. Eccles had a strong set piece and were especially sucessful in the line out with Captain Tom Connell claiming or disrupting anything in the air. Improved discipline and depth in attack will see the colts notch up more wins than losses this season. Good start to the season. FT Eccles 23 - 12 Sale.

ECCLES LADIES Good Afternoon and a warm welcome from our Women and Girls section at Eccles RFC. Whilst we have been enjoying the Men’s 1XV prompt return to rugby, we have spent our weeks preparing hard for our preseason games. Though we can’t wait to adorn our much loved navy and white hoops, we’re utilising the extra sessions to further refine our craft, whilst introducing some newer players to the tricks of the trade. After a solid block of training and preparation, we were ready to take to the pitch on the 5th of September to play our much anticipated first preseason friendly. Unfortunately, our planned opposition were unable to field a full team, and despite trying to find an alternative fixture, there were no teams available with a full complement of players. Although this was inevitably a disappointment to the girls, we planned a training session in place of the fixture to further embed our playing process. The lengths to which our girls will go to make themselves available for the team is admirable. We had a strong group of 18 players ready to face the late Summer sun. As the colts took to the first team pitch, we worked alongside them building our routines and structured play, ready for next weekend's away fixture. Individuals such as Sarah Williams and the Whailing girls girls had notable performances and are continually demonstrating their progress at training. Old friends Mavis Tam and Eto Ding have returned from Hong Kong, and showed a masterclass in tackle technique and defensive strategy. The session concluded on high spirits as we settled in to watch the colts secure victory over a well drilled Sale outfit. As a playing group, we have rallied from this anticlimax with a heightened sense of confidence; confidence in our ability to produce a full squad of high ability players, with the desire to commit and compete out on a Sunday. We will continue to work together as we strive to create stronger, fitter and more intelligent players. We’re excited to be able to show our dedicated supporters the fruits of our labour, and we look forward to seeing you up on the balcony cheering us on at the next home game. To any aspiring future ladies players, contact James Wright, Head Coach & Director of Women & Girls Rugby. Rowanne Smalley // Eccles RFC Ladies Captain

WALKING RUGBY Numbers attending Walking rugby at Eccles are slightly down in the past few weeks due to self-isolating and some very poor weather. We do however have four new members to the group - a mum of a Junior player, two former senior players and a new recruit who heard about us from a friend. Eccles RFC were one of the first clubs in the region to embrace Walking Rugby and our group remain the largest to date. We are now approaching our 2nd year and until the Covid lockdown in March our activities had been continual. We recommenced Walking Rugby activities on the 7th of September and had 19 participants at the first session. This response is a good reflection of our group of guys and gals who have a strong bond, turn up regularly, and play enthusiastically every Monday evening at 7.00pm, on the 3G pitch, regardless of the weather conditions. Our challenge in the months ahead will be to re-instate the momentum we had gained and get our Walking back up to speed! The game itself encompasses a touch tackle rule so we’re within the RFU guidelines, and we’re also coming to terms with the necessary technology to make registration and playing possible ( we also keep a paper record of participants for those who are not smart phone savvy) We keep in touch through our own What's-app group and new players from within the club are always welcome so why not give it a try! DUKE OF EDINBURGHS AWARD The Gold Award Team at Buckingham Palace The DofE award is the world’s leading youth achievement award, giving 14-24 year olds who wish to take up the challenge, the opportunity to strive to be the best they can be and gain the confidence to believe anything they put their mind to is possible. The programme takes between one and four years to complete and is recognised and valued by employers and universities alike. Eccles RFC were the first rugby club in the UK to offer the DofE award programme to its players. The scheme was established in honour of Christopher Tickle who was posthumously awarded the DofE Gold Award by HRH Prince Phillip in 2010. Since 2011, the club’s young people have achieved over 100 Bronze awards, over 60 Silver awards and 48 prestigious Gold Awards – a testament to the hard work and dedication of the participants and the Eccles team of volunteer leaders. The DofE programme is a journey of adventure and discovery that compliments the ethos of Rugby by rewarding teamwork, endeavour, physical activity, learning skills and community volunteering. To achieve an award a young person must show persistence, commitment, progress and personal development over a period of time. Every activity must be successfully completed and assessed. Activities take a minimum of one hour a week over a set period of time, so they can be fitted in around academic study, hobbies and social lives. To commence a Bronze Award you must be aged 14+ years, 15+ years for Silver and 16+ years to start a Gold Award. For more details on the DofE at Eccles RFC and how to become involved check out the club website or email:baines.mark@virginmedia.com. Mark Baines, DofE Chair, Eccles RFC

GORTON STREET GAZETTE Eccles RFC 1950 Eccles Rugby Football Club was reestablished 124 years ago in 1897 and has now worn its iconic Blue and White hooped shirt for 100 years. The hoops were first adopted in the aftermath of WWI, when the club had to rebuild with many of its new recruits running out to play at Stott Lane with injuries suffered in the trenches. In its early days before the war, Eccles RFC had played in green shirts and we believe this switch in colours was a tribute to fallen comrades in the Salford Pals Battalions. Overcoming adversity, recovering from set backs and enforced breaks in activity have been a feature of our club’s history. The commencement of WW2 in September 1939, meant that the 1939-1940 season as scheduled never got under way. Eccles played a few away games against local teams as our home ground and pavilion at Redclyffe Road, Barton, were taken over by 356 AA Company (later known as 356 Searchlight Battery R.A.) for defence against Luftwaffe bombing. As players were called up to the services it became obvious that rugby would have to be abandoned. The war in Europe came to an end on 8th May, 1945 and, eight months later, on 25th January, 1946, an article appeared in the Eccles Journal stating, "Eccles R.F.C., whose activities discontinued at the outbreak of war with Germany, is to be revived. Players who were in any way associated with the club before the war, or who wish to play, are asked to attend a meeting on Friday, 8th February at rhe Cross Keys Hotel, Eccles,” A trial game took place on Saturday, 31st August where "several

GORTON STREET GAZETTE newcomers showed distinct promise". The following Saturday the Eccles 1st XV played at home against Central Old Boys. Conditions were in favour of open play and the home side won by 29 points to 5 points. The Journal reported, "After a lapse of six years, Eccles commenced activities with a game versus Central O.B.”, Now that's what you call a break in play! Our visitors today, West Park St Helens RUFC, were formed in August 1947 at a meeting in the Black Bull pub. In 1948 Eccles RFC moved to Gorton Street and the first recorded match between the clubs appears to be in 1952 when the Eccles Captain was Harry Broomhead. The game at Eccles on 26th January 1951 was cancelled due to weather and West Park had the upper hand in the early encounters of 1st March 1952 West Park 21 v Eccles 5; 1st November, 1952 Eccles 5 v West Park 5. Which brings us neatly to today’s match. Our last league fixture at Gorton Street was on Saturday 4th March 2020 against Glossop. The outbreak of the Coronavirus brought the 2019-2020 season to an abrupt end and the following 2020-2021 season never materialised. Déjà vu. After a postponement of eighteen months, with fixtures now resumed for the 2021-2022 season, we are finally able to look forward to hosting regular competitive rugby once again. It’s been a long time, but thankfully not as long as that caused by the previous national crisis. Sheila Thomas, Eccles RFC historian & Chris Gaffey, Eccles RFC Chairman

Discipline and Sportsmanship define our game. • Respect the match officials' decisions, even if they appear to make a mistake. Remember, they are volunteers and without them there would be no game. • Encourage all players irrespective of their ability. Never ridicule a player, regardless of the shirt they wear. • Appreciate good performance and achievement from all players, irrespective of their team. • Acknowledge effort and endeavour rather than the desire to 'win at all cost'. • Support the players. Shout ‘for’ them not ‘at’ them. • Never verbally abuse players, coaches, match officials or fellow spectators; such negative behaviour affects the players and referee’s performance and attitude. • Remain behind the barriers. The field is for the competitors. Remember children play rugby for their own enjoyment, not for that of the spectators. 1897
