GORTON STREET GAZETTE 50 years ago The Committee minute book records - 3rd January 1972 - a receipt had been received from Salford Royal Hospital Management committee for the amount raised at the charity match, £15.67. There was also a reminder from club Chairman Harry Broomhead about the working party on January 7th. The following week it was recorded that a great deal of work had been achieved by the few who had attended the working party. Another one would be held at a later date. Harry of course would later become a stalwart “fossil". 40 years ago 4th January 1982 - The Lancashire cup fixture with Broughton Park was confirmed for Sunday, 17th Jan., weather permitting. The previous November, Eccles had beat Ruskin Park 15-3 to progress into the 3rd round. 18th January 1982. - Lancashire Cup vs Broughton Park, a successful day despite the fact that we lost 25-6. Thanks expressed to Captain Pete Nicholls and vice-captain Steve Dore and all who helped, in particular Eddie Williams, who organised the admission charges and car parking. £80+ was raised. Mr Dore is still playing, competing in the recent Friday night Vets game. 30 years ago 9th January 1992 - Club Captain, Andy Brunt records in the committee meeting minutes that "training has slowed in the past couple of weeks, probably due to Christmas, he will contact the team captains to raise the subject with players".
