We wonder what impact our lives have had on those we have encountered during our lifetime. In the same way, my first thought about the Eagle Ranch program is how its influence continues beyond the boys and girls who live here for a season. Time after time, I hear our graduates emphasize that what they learned at the Ranch is being taught to their own children and how those children will, in turn, parent their children. The impact of what happens here in one child’s life never stops with that child; it continues throughout generations. Our first newsletter of the year higlights Honor & Memorial giving as well as other opportunities, such as bequests and recurring gifts. Support through individual gifts and participation in our Honor & Memorial Gift Program are crucial for us to meet our annual budgetary needs. Nearly 80 percent of every gift we receive goes directly to our daily care of children, training and support for families, and providing education to professionals and organizations in our community and beyond. I am so thankful for the generosity of those who have partnered with us for almost 32 years. Your support has truly made a difference in the lives of our boys and girls and future generations. Broken Chains Scott Sims graduated Eagle Ranch in 2007. Today, he is a successful, up-and-coming shift manager at a local restaurant. He is happily married, has a beautiful nine-monthold baby girl, regularly attends church, and is grateful for the life he has. However, Scott’s life was not always so bright. Adopted by his grandparents when he was two-years-old, Scott grew up as an only child. His life—both at home and at school—was filled with turmoil. Constant arguments filled the home, and Scott’s gang involvement and daily fist-fights consumed his days at school. After being expelled from school at the age of 12 and facing jail time, Scott’s school counselor gave him an ultimatum: military school or Eagle Ranch. His family chose the latter. Scott had difficulty adjusting to his new way of life at Eagle Ranch. When he first arrived at the Ranch, he continued to cause disruptions at school and at home, trying to do whatever he could to get out. Casting judgment on everyone he came in contact with, Scott had difficulty making friends. Scott Sims with wife Jennifer and daughter, Venadee. “For the first six months I was there, I hated the Ranch. I fought tooth and nail to get out. I was either causing a problem at home before we left, or I was causing a problem in the Hope Home as soon as we got to the Ranch. At home, I didn’t have any rules or any structure, so the whole Eagle Ranch environment was foreign to me.” Six months into the program, Scott finally came to the realization that he didn’t have to fight anymore— at home, in school, or in the program. Through the counseling he and his grandparents received, Scott gradually was able
to let go of his anger and aggression. Scott even began to make friends in the Hope Home and at Eagle Ranch School. “I learned how to be an independent and productive person and keep God at the center of my life.” “We did individual counseling for the first few months, but then we came together as a family. It was in these counseling sessions that my grandparents and I were finally able to talk out our problems. It wasn’t always calm and collected. Sometimes there was yelling, and I was disrespectful,” Scott recalled, “but our counselor, Bruce, helped us work through our struggles.” Because of Eagle Ranch, Scott says that he strives to better himself every single day. All that he learned at the Ranch helped him to become a confident leader, and Scott is able to boast of God’s glory. A man set free from the chains of his past, Scott believes that the 24 months of work at Eagle Ranch are worth the many years of reward he sees in his future. “If it weren’t for Eagle Ranch, I don’t know where I would be today. I learned how to be an independent and productive person and keep God at the center of my life. I am better able to handle life's challenges and careful to be precise and powerful when I speak,” said Scott. “I am changed and know God’s not done with me yet.” Scott Sims is a 2007 graduate of the Eagle Ranch program and lives with his wife and daughter in Dahlonega, Georgia. Briana A Meaningful Encounter In her first year of the Eagle Ranch program, Briana was having a hard time settling in to a new way of life. In the midst of adjusting to a new home, new rules and new people, Briana was desperately in need of encouragement. Then, a chance encounter changed everything. a meaningful encounter Briana’s mother checked her out of Eagle Ranch School one day for her annual dentist appointment. While sitting in the waiting room, a man sitting next to Briana and her mother noticed Briana’s Eagle Ranch shirt. Curiously, he asked if Briana went there. When she responded “yes,” the man excitedly responded that he too used to be in the Eagle Ranch program, nine years ago. Scott motioned to the baby he was holding, his daughter. He said that Eagle Ranch not only helped him become a better person, but also taught him how to be a father. The chance meeting gave Briana and her mother hope for their family and future. His name was Scott Sims. Scott laughed as he shared stories with them, reflecting on the time he spent at the Ranch. He encouraged Briana and her mother, explaining that it was also hard for him. It took time before he realized just how valuable the information, tools and skills he learned at Eagle Ranch really were.

Planned Giving Sustains the Future David and Cecelia Ratcliffe had one important lesson they raised their children to follow: "Be the very best you can be." Their support for Eagle Ranch is also based on this lesson. “We feel like Eagle Ranch offers children the opportunity to be their best,” noted Cecelia. “It’s heartwarming to hear the stories of children who have gone on to raise their own successful families. The environment is focused on the children and helping them thrive." When the Ratcliffes met with a financial planner to prepare their estate plans, they decided they wanted to ensure their support of the Ranch would last beyond their lifetimes. “We have a strong belief that sustaining this kind of work is essential,” David said. “We wanted to be a part of it beyond our current timeframe. We’ve been blessed with resources. We have an obligation to take care of our own family first, but beyond that we have an obligation to help others." David, former CEO of Southern Company, has served on Eagle Ranch’s Board of Advisors for more than 20 years. The Ranch’s careful stewardship, private funding and debt-free status helped reassure him that their decision is a wise investment. “The quality of the program and facilities are great indicators of responsible stewardship,” David said. “The character, integrity and transparency of what they do with what is given means a lot.” sustaining essential work Through sustainable building practices, faithful volunteers and dedicated staff, Eagle Ranch’s campus is meticulously maintained at a fraction of the cost of a similar facility. This enables nearly 80 percent of donations to directly benefit children, their families and the community. The Ratcliffes encourage others to consider leaving Eagle Ranch in their wills or other estate plans.“If you haven’t been to the Ranch, or visited recently, go see the campus and meet the people,” David said. “The Ranch, its staff and the results speak for themselves.
