STAUB EAGLE RANCH, INC. Post Office Box 7200 Chestnut Mountain, GA 30502 t: 770.967.8500 · f: 770.967.3757 EagleRanch.org the eagle ranch mission Our Mission Eagle Ranch helps make life better for children and their families, positively impacting communities for the glory of God. Reflections Boys and girls come to Eagle Ranch from many backgrounds and struggles. Their personalities are just as varied. There are always a few children who particularly stand out, not always for the good. We often will see a child come to the Ranch and gain attention through poor choices and behaviors. Because of their charisma and commanding presence, they can negatively influence other children. I meet with these children not to reprimand them, but to speak about missed opportunity. I tell them that they can choose to direct their natural abilities to be a positive leader. The Bible has many passages about being an encouragement to others, such as 1 Corinthians 14:26, " . . . Let all things be done for building up.” The boys and girls who take this message to heart become powerful leaders during their time at the Ranch and well beyond. One such leader is a Spring graduate, Eli. As you’ll see, Eli has directed his influence in positive ways. He is one of our winners of The Second Mile Award, which is given to children who are selfless leaders. Thank you very much for your partnership with us as we serve these children and their families. Sincerely Edwin J. Staub Founder and Executive Director "I was a lightning rod when I first came here. I just wanted negative energy around me. I thought it was going to be more like a summer camp, and I wouldn't have to put in any work. But I had to put in a lot of work. Now, I think I'm more of a positive leader." Eli, 14, the hope homE Pictured with mother, Angela

"I'm quite sad that I have to leave. The Ranch feels like my second home. I have bittersweet memories of this place. If I were to tell a new kid what to look for, it would be a lot of things. Give the houseparents an easy time. Don't make things stressful. Just have fun and make memories. I'm grateful that there's a place like this and people who give up their time and other future goals to help a new generation of kids." andrew, 16 the peace home Congratulations to our Spring Graduates congratulations to our graduates Eagle Ranch's Spring 2016 graduates include Andrew, Eli, Griffin and Bailey (not pictured). Graduating from Eagle Ranch is more than an individual achievement. Based upon goals set for the entire family, graduation represents an overall commitment to change and moving forward in a way that will impact generations to come. Eagle Ranch supports its graduates through a counseling and continuing education program known as Aftercare. This program provides families with counseling sessions and opportunities to participate in seminars on a variety of topics as well as team building exercises and gatherings to offer community support. "It was hard for my family before we came to the Ranch. We would fight all the time. Nobody would get along. Since I've been here, I've learned how to respect my dad and my siblings. When I first started respecting my dad, he would continue to argue and talk back to me, because he didn't believe I had really changed. But after a couple of months of showing him respect, he started showing me respect too. My family members know that I'm trying to change, so it's about continuing to build trust with them. I've gotten a lot of help from my houseparents, counselors and teachers. They were always there when I needed them." Bailey, 14 the peace home

Extinguishing Anger’s Flame “I feel like both my houseparents helped me understand that God isn’t the one who caused me to get cancer. He’s the one who got me through it.” When you first hear about Griffin Sewell, it may seem like he’s a textbook troubled teen. At 15, he had been dismissed from military school, had no respect for authority and considered himself an atheist. Then, you hear Griffin’s story. Like so many struggling youth, there is more beneath the surface. He had . . . no respect for authority and considered himself an atheist. As a young child, Griffin’s father died, and his mom eventually remarried. He didn’t understand why someone new had to be in his home. He wasn’t interested in a substitute for his dad. He didn’t like people telling him how he should feel or act. So he took matters into his own hands. “I felt like his explosive anger could have horrible consequences in his life,” recalled his mom, Sally Reynolds. “I was scared. I was scared for our family, and I was scared for Griffin.” His lack of respect and acting out led Sally to enroll her son in military school in 7th grade. The structure helped, but Griffin’s anger was always present, like a glowing ember. During his 8th grade year, the ember burst into full flame with the utterance of one word: cancer. At 14, Griffin faced a battle with liver sarcoma. Any progress in his behavior and relationships evaporated in the 10 long months of chemotherapy that followed. Though the treatment was successful, and Griffin is cancer free, he didn’t see how God could exist. How could God give cancer to a person who had already lost so much? Instead, his anger burned, leading to his school expulsion. “I didn’t know what to do. We had beaten physical cancer, but our family issues felt like spiritual cancer. God opened the door to Eagle Ranch when we were devastated and desperate,” said Sally. "I realized that I didn't like being in trouble all the time." As a freshman in high school, reality set in for Griffin. What was his anger accomplishing? The flame died down, but it didn’t burn out. “I think I was just more willing to change at that point. I realized that I didn’t like being in trouble all the time,” Griffin remembered. Griffin sewell, 16 the joy home Pictured with mother, Sally Reynolds, and dog, Remi. Eagle Ranch gave Griffin a chance to reflect on all he had been through and accept guidance from men, which he had struggled with since his father’s passing. extinguishing anger's flame “My housedad, Jerry, is a great guy. He encourages me when I slip up and gets me on the straight path. He tells me the truth, and tells me what he sees in me,” he said. “My assistant counselor, Wes, really understood what I was going through and helped me out a lot while I was struggling.” Learning how to express his feelings and communicate more effectively, Griffin also changed his views on God. “My family went through a big change while I was at the Ranch. There’s a lot less fighting and tension,” he said. “It was a lot of work, but it was worth it.” “I feel like both my houseparents helped me understand that God isn’t the one who caused me to get cancer. He’s the one who got me through it.” Griffin looks forward to his 11th grade year, turning his fire into passion for basketball and building a positive life. His family continues to navigate their relationship with the tools they gained through Eagle Ranch.

Eagle Ranch school Eagle Ranch School PrPess Report The 2015-16 school year was exciting for Eagle Ranch School. For the third time since its founding in 2001, the school received accreditation status with the Southern Association of Colleges and School (SACS), a division of AdvancED. The school also launched an expanded reading program to help increase student literacy. Both endeavors yielded impressive results. ogrogres Report The school was commended for powerful practices in the areas of Teaching and Learning Impact, Leadership Capacity and Resource Utilization. Eagle Ranch School scored well above national averages in each of these areas, receiving the maximum score of 400 in Resource Utilization. “I have never seen a perfect 400 in the area of Resource Utilization,” noted Pat Summers, External Review Lead Evaluator for AdvancED. “The school has well qualified staff, material and fiscal resources, and a state-of-the-art facility and technology infrastructure. This enables Eagle Ranch to provide services that support its purpose and direction to ensure success for all students. Eagle Ranch School has been impressive in every way.” What SACS Accreditation Means SACS is a nationally-recognized accreditation focused on increasing student performance. To earn accreditation, schools must meet high standards, be evaluated by a team of professionals from outside the school and implement a continuous process of school improvement. “Accreditation demonstrates to our students, parents and community that we are focused on raising student achievement, providing an enriching learning environment, and maintaining an efficient and effective operation staffed by highly qualified educators,” said Eagle Ranch Director of Education Jon DeWaal. Reading Levels on the Rise During the 2014-15 school year, Eagle Ranch School tested the Read 180 reading intervention program from Scholastic. Early results were encouraging, leading the school to expand the program this year, combining the online curriculum with classroom instruction and printed materials. The additional effort paid off. Nearly 60 percent of the overall student population is reading at or above their grade levels. Compared to national standards, Eagle Ranch students excelled. National standards benchmark 8th grade reading levels. On average 35, percent of U.S. 8th graders can read at or above grade level, compared to 63 percent of Eagle Ranch School 8th graders. Endowing Education Tommy and Chantal Bagwell have a special heart for education. Tommy’s mother, former head of the Georgia PTA and on the Board of the national organization, passionately advocated for education to be available to all. Chantal homeschooled the couple’s four children and is involved in several educational causes. Longtime supporters of Eagle Ranch, the Bagwells have recently focused their efforts on Eagle Ranch School. Tommy and Chantal Bagwell “ By having a school right on the campus, the children have the ongoing support that meets the many needs they have when they come to the Ranch. ” The Bagwells provide a yearly gift to fund the school’s curriculum and technology, ensuring students have up-to-date content and technology. This type of gift is known as “funds functioning as an endowment,” in which the donor commits to underwriting an ongoing need with the potential goal of endowing the need in perpetuity. “I consider myself to have an outcomes philosophy. We will provide regular funding to programs that are true to the mission and results that we agreed to support,” Tommy said. “This gives us an ability to shift the area of funding if needed.” The Bagwells have three criteria for education funding: proximity to North Georgia, need for the program and likelihood for success. They believe Eagle Ranch School meets all of these. “By having a school right on the campus, the children have the ongoing support that meets the many needs they have when they come to the Ranch,” said Tommy. “They provide an environment that helps them get on track and reintegrate when they are ready to return to public school.” “I’m impressed with how they can help students advance so quickly,” noted Chantal. Through curriculum that adapts to each student’s needs, Eagle Ranch students can catch up, and even exceed, their grade level. make an active endowment today Underwriting Your Area of Interest Like the Bagwells, you can designate funds to act as an endowment. To discuss potential underwriting opportunities, please contact Eddie Staub at 770.967.8500 or estaub@eagleranch.org.
