Recently, the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum took over the 52 Museums Instagram account. 52 Museums (@52Museums) is an international social media account focused on connecting museums and fans of museums. Each week, at least one museum posts about their collections, conservation and grant funded projects, programs, and mission. This account provides museums with a single place to learn about great cultural institutions throughout the world. Social media, at its core, is an interactive online platform for people to communicate and connect with others, and the evolution of technology allows for more people to be informed. While connecting with the 52 Museums audience, the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum received positive engagement. We shared posts about our collections, our preservation efforts, our programs, our exhibits, and our building. The post that received the most engagement was about our textile storage project made possible by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, followed by the restoration of the building. We experienced a 17% increase in Instagram followers as a result in our 52 Museums campaign. Social media is a powerful way of connecting with audiences.
