COURSE LEVELS When you come to join a course at CNWL, we will ensure that you are put onto the level of course most suitable for you. The course level will enable you to develop and build your skills, while also giving you the best opportunity to succeed, pass and progress. Most courses at CNWL range from ‘entry’ level (basic skills) through to Level 3 (A Level equivalent). The level you start on depends on your existing skills and qualifications. To decide what level you will start on, we will: • Consider what course you want to do and what experience you have in that subject • Look at your existing qualifications (e.g. GCSEs) especially English and Maths • In some cases, you will do an ‘initial assessment’ - this is not an exam, but a way of seeing the best level for you to start your studies at. Many of our students start with us at Level 3, while many more progress through a range of levels to reach their ambitions. CNWL also teach a range of Higher Education (HE) courses. To find out more, ask us, look out for Level 4 or 5 courses under www.cnwl.ac.uk/courses or see www.cnwl.ac.uk/HE 06 www.cnwl.ac.uk

Okethia Fagan English “ As I have a hearing impairment I needed to learn British Sign Language. I studied with City Lit and then came to CNWL through their partnership with the College. I’m studying English, and want to develop my language skills so I can progress to a construction course. The College provides a good environment for people like me with a hearing impairment. We are supported by signers as the College works with City Lit. We are integrated in a class with hearing students - at first it was difficult to communicate but I have enjoyed teaching the other students some signing and it has helped us to encourage each other’s learning.” Nikolett Peteri ESOL Together with her classmates at the College, Nikolett helped create an exhibition held at Brent Civic Centre about the history of Brent’s Somali community. “ Working on this project, talking to other people who have learned English as an adult, I felt quite relaxed and it has helped me improve my spoken English as well as my writing. It was very enjoyable to speak to people from different backgrounds and ask them questions about their history. It’s been such a great experience for me, I’ve really enjoyed it.” 09 CASE STUDY CASE STUDY
