Going digital with our newsletter, adding a phone number, new Facebook page, and introducing a new website! Change is inevitable in our fast changing world so we want to keep up! Your best tool with technology is patience! As we continue to grow within the digital world we are always learning and still trying to find our best path. For those who are avid Facebook users, we have created a new AMTA South Dakota Facebook page and a corresponding Official AMTA South Dakota Group. These two platforms will be part of our most used methods to get you information. We will also continue to send emails. If your email is anything like most users you have more junk mail than necessary. If you do see an email come from AMTA South Dakota please make sure to read it! We want you to be as informed as possible in regards to state or national news. Your opinion is appreciated as we work to book education events or bring new ideas to the chapter. So all those surveys we ask you to fill out either at conference or online are important! We implemented a new phone number this year so that members have a central line of communication. Our new website has been rolled out as well. The old website is still active but we ask that you now go to the new website for more up-to-date information. Please be patient as we are working to get the website updated and making the platform as streamlined as possible. The trained touch Page 3 AMTA Past President –Carrie Badker Carrie Badker, SD AMTA Past President, passed away in April. Carrie was SD AMTA President in 1983. She owned Carrie’s Kadesh in Mitchell where she practiced massage and taught massage students for 35 years. I knew Carrie well. She was my teacher and she gave me my first job as a massage therapist. Carrie’s support for AMTA was passed down to her students. All of Carrie’s students were required to join AMTA. All of her students were also required to take the National Certification exam. Carrie was a nurse before becoming a massage therapist. As a massage therapist Carrie had a very broad repertoire of massage techniques. Because of her nursing “What is the essence of life? To background, she learned some unusual massages including stroke massage, hemorrhoid massage and prostate massage. These techniques were later taught to Carrie’s students. In hemorrhoid massage one does not actually touch the hemorrhoid. It is a technique that helps shrink the hemorrhoid and reduce the pain caused by a flair up. Prostate massage can be used to help a person with an enlarged prostate to urinate. This technique also does not involve direct contact with the prostate or private area. Carrie used stroke massage to calm the nervous system of clients that had had a stroke. A stroke victim is at risk of overstimulation which may lead to another stroke. Carrie’s method worked wonders in reducing that risk. Submitted by Patricia Bleeker Historian and SD Delegate serve others and to do good.” — Aristotle Keep reading to find out about our volunteer opportuniDID YOU KNOW? Nominations & Awards Chair Annual Report 2018 Annual Meeting, Huron SD, April 27, 2018 ~ Dawn Menning, Interim A&N Chair 40 Year Member Congratulations E. Marie Anderson in celebrating 40 years of AMTA Membership! E. Marie is a retired professional living in the NE corner of the state. Wishing you all the Best E. Marie! President Dawn Menning (right) presenting E Marie Anderson her award of 40 Yeards of Service 25 Year Members Congratulations Brenda Lanz and Grace Lonning for being AMTA Members for 25 Years!! These two wonders have “worn many hats” within our chapter. Both have volunteered for many years to assist the chapter in growing and developing into the fine chapter that it is today. Congratulations and Thank you, Brenda and Grace for all that you are and all that you have done in your 25 years as an AMTA member. Wishing you both success today and in your future. Certificate of Appreciation Valerie Rowen – As a chapter volunteer in this chair position, one may not always have immediate business to attend to; however, once the need for the call to duty arises, this volunteer is often witnessed going above and beyond the written job description for this position. She does her very best to promote and support the profession of massage therapy by supporting legislation and continued licensure for all massage therapists in the state of South Dakota! Aside from keeping “an ear to the ground” and “eye” on legislative action, Valerie Rowen has noticeably made it a priority to foster healthy, respectful relationships with fellow massage therapists, AMTA-SD Members, voting members of the AMTA-SD Board, the South Dakota Massage Therapy Board, the National AMTA board members and staff, lobbyists, legislators and anyone else that she comes into communication with. Valerie is gifted in responding effectively and professionally when communicating the chapter members interests, desires, and needs, which was exemplified by the last legislative session. Thank you, Valerie Rowen, for all you do to promote the profession of massage therapy, the licensed massage therapists and the members of the American Therapy Massage Association of South Dakota. Certificate of Appreciation Patricia Bleeker, Tish Gilmore, & Rebeca Lyle – On February 7, 2018 these massage therapists unselfishly took time away from their massage practices, their clients, and their personal lives to attend the Senate Health and Human Services Committee Hearing in support of the continuation of licensure for all massage therapists in the state of South Dakota. In doing so, these fine therapists have promoted the profession of massage therapy and its future, supported our Government Relations Chair and lobbyists, as well as the entire membership of the AMTASD Chapter. Patricia Bleeker, Tish Gilmore and Rebeca Lyle, we appreciate your support and dedication to the promotion of professional massage therapy and the continuation of state licensure. Thank You!! President Dawn Menning presents member Brenda Lanza with her 25 Year Membership certificate. Ace Cupping Level II Class attendees. Nominations & Awards Chair Annual Report 2018 Annual Meeting, Huron SD, April 27, 2018 ~ Dawn Menning, Interim A&N Chair Awards for 2018 AMTA South Dakota Annual Meeting & Banquet Certificate of Appreciation Dan Jensen – I nominated Dan Jensen because I feel he has been a very supportive teacher for South Dakota. Dan is an instructor at the South Dakota School of Massage Therapy. He encourages his students to keep learning and to become members of AMTA. He has even has attended Conferences with them! I have had massages from a couple of Dan’s Recipients Dan Jensen and Deb Tams of the South Dakota School of Massage with their Certificates of Appreciation. students and feel that they are well trained. Jeanne Thune In appreciation for your continued promotion and support of the massage therapy profession and the AMTA SD Chapter, Dan Jensen, we Thank you. Certificate of Appreciation South Dakota School of Massage Therapy – The award recipient that I am referring to has had a long-standing relationship with the AMTA-SD Chapter – a relationship that has benefited the chapter membership as well as non-AMTA massage therapists in many ways and on many levels. It is with sincere gratitude and appreciation of your continued support and promotion of the profession of massage therapy and the AMTA SD Chapter, as well as your participation in the recent School Visit Membership Outreach Event, that our chapter would like to show their appreciation to the South Dakota School of Massage Therapy in Sioux Falls with a chapter Certificate of Appreciation Award for 2018. Thank you. Certificate of Appreciation Ryan Baird, Patricia Bleeker, Jennine Dolphus, James Johanneson, Stacy Sprengeler, Kristen Timmermans, & Heather Vetter – Teams…. like many events, this chapter event took a team of volunteers to successfully execute. Each of these volunteers, regardless of the role they played, were equally important to this chapter event’s success. Matter of fact, some of these gracious volunteers may humbly tell you the they “did not do much”. In my opinion, each member did their best to contribute their time, ideas, talents, support and dedication to promoting the massage therapy profession and the AMTA-SD Chapter by participating in this Chapter School Visit Outreach Event held in conjunction with the SD School of Massage Therapy in Sioux Falls on February 10, 2018. This event was created so that the students, faculty and AMTA Members could meet face to face in an opportunity to exchange massages. In the process of exchanging massages with the students, the members were Recipients Patricia Bleeker, Jennine Dolphus, Kristin Timmerman, Heather Vetter, and Dawn Menning Certificate of Appreciation Recipients– Kris Skorseth, Christine Ellwein, JuliAnn , Heather Faini, Jennine Dolphus, Kristin Timmerman, Arden Yee, Russell Kimball, Dawn Menning. Nominations & Awards Chair Annual Report 2018 Annual Meeting, Huron SD, April 27, 2018 ~ Dawn Menning, Interim A&N Chair Awards for 2018 AMTA South Dakota Annual Meeting & Banquet Certificate of Appreciation Amber Rasmussen greets member Rhonda Rittenour and her spouse at the 2018 Spring Conference Annual Meeting & Supper. Ryan Baird, Patricia Bleeker, Jennine Dolphus, James Johanneson, Stacy Sprengeler, Kristen Timmermans, & Heather Vetter – It is with much appreciation that I present this Certificate of Appreciation Award to Ryan Baird, Patricia Bleeker, Jennine Dolphus, James Johanneson, Stacy Sprengeler, Kristen Timmermans, & Heather Vetter for your contribution to our membership outreach and the promotion of the AMTA SD Chapter. Chapter Distinguished Service Award Heather Vetter – The 2018 Distinguished Service Award recipient encompasses the qualities of a good leader: The ability to see the “Big Picture”, the intuition to know what direction the chapter needs to grown in and what we need to do to accomplish the desired growth, and most importantly the willingness to go above and beyond her appointed chair position duties to assist in the AMTA SD Chapter’s acceleration “into the future”, while doing her best to ensure everyone is comfortable and on-board for this adventure! In the spring of 2017 this volunteer’s life took a turn towards the future of the AMTA SD Chapter. First, she became an AMTA member in March, then in April of 2017 she attended her very first AMTA SD conference and annul membership meeting. At that conference she was inspired to become a chapter volunteer in a chair position. At the time that she was appointed, I would imagine that she was unaware of the depth that we would encourage her to dive or the depths that she was willing to go in her involvement. Her journey started out by creating a new chapter website and updating all the information on it, working with other chapter volunteers to link important information to the website and to create the on-line registration link for AMTA SD Conferences. Heather worked with national staff and volunteers to obtain a chapter phone number that is answered automatically and sends an email to the appropriate volunteer alerting them of a call. Her eyes and ears are ever-ready to alert the chapter board and appropriate volunteers of anything said in the media that does not promote the best interest of the massage therapy profession or the AMTA SD Member, as she did this past year when the Governor made a couple of comments that brought us to attention. Heather has also taken an interest in working more closely with the membership, more specifically in the areas of membership satisfaction, chapter promotion and membership outreach. She has taken on the extra responsibility of being the head of the survey work group and recently assisted in the setting up of and the success of the Chapter School Visit Outreach Event, which she also participated in. Not only did she assist in setting this up, she drove a car load of members to Sioux Falls from Aberdeen to attend the event. Heather was a contact person for the school and created the survey that was sent to participating students and instructor for post-event feedback. In addition to what I have already listed, Heather agreed to President Dawn Menning (right) presenting Heather Vetter her award . IPP Christine Ellwein swearing in board members. L-R President re-elect Dawn Menning , Financial Administrator Amber Rasmussen, and Voting Board Member Heather Vetter. President Dawn Menning gives recipient Kris Skortseth a hug as she accepts her award.

Nominations & Awards Chair Annual Report 2018 Annual Meeting, Huron SD, April 27, 2018 ~ Dawn Menning, Interim A&N Chair Awards for 2018 AMTA South Dakota Annual Meeting & Banquet Chapter Distinguished Service Award -Heather Vetter –cont’d….. Heather has been a key-player in many chapter volunteer roles in her 1 year of membership. Her dedication to the members and support of the chapter is evident in her outstanding efforts as a chapter volunteer. I am honored to present the Distinguished Service Award to Heather Vetter! Chapter Presidents Award Kristine Skorseth - There are few people in the world that I have found to be as genuinely dedicated, organized and creative as I have found this member to be. This member has a huge heart and has the membership and the chapter’s best interests held there. I am curious, oh “Wonder Woman’ how you’ve done it all these years? What fuels you to give so compassionately and feel so deeply? Did you ever think that when you signed up to become an AMTA Member 22 years ago that you would have given SO much to so many through your years of service as an AMTA South Dakota Volunteer? Did you realize that the first time I met you at an AMTA SD conference, you unknowingly became my mentor? The sincere kindness you extended to myself and other therapists left a lasting impression. I felt that I was welcome and that I belonged amongst the therapists in this chapter, even before I became an AMTA member. Not only did she encourage me to be an AMTA member, she inspired me to be a better person, to volunteer for our chapter and to be the best leader I can be. This member has worn many hats in her 18 years of volunteering for our chapter. I believe that being a mentor is probably the longest held, and least acknowledged position she has held, and she continues to be a mentor for the up and coming volunteers. Not only did she share her skills and talents, she shared her love and friendship with many AMTA members and massage therapists. A kind word and a thoughtful gesture can go a very long way. Aside from mentoring, this volunteer served as our chapter secretary for 11 years. She also has served in the roles of Chapter Awards & Nominations Chair, Delegate, 1 st Vice President, Treasurer and Legislative Chair. There are many attributes that I can see in her as a colleague and a friend that we all benefit from, such as her big heart, her team spirit and her willingness to go above and beyond when her “plate is already full”. It is with heartfelt appreciation that I honor Kristine Skorseth with the 2018 Presidents Award. Nominations & Awards Chair Annual Report 2018 Annual Meeting, Huron SD, April 27, 2018 ~ Dawn Menning, Interim A&N Chair Awards for 2018 AMTA South Dakota Annual Meeting & Banquet Chapter Meritorious Award -Jenna Williams - This chapter volunteer understands that effective communication is like the healthy nervous system of an organization. Her first foray into Chapter volunteerism was to take over as newsletter editor and promptly transitioned the publishing from all paper to predominately distributed online, successfully dragging our Chapter into the digital age! President Dawn Menning presents award to Jenna Williams. Jenna's cyber skills reach further as she has redefined and streamlined the Chapter Facebook Group and coordinates with the Website Chair to ensure current and consistent information is available wherever a member might seek it. She is readily available to assist others in leadership as we experience technological challenges. Jenna's innovative and problem-solving methods have been noticed by AMTA National staff as a recent newsletter Q & A document that she developed was recognized for its concept to be shared on the HUB as a useful tool for other Chapters. The South Dakota Chapter is fortunate to have Jenna and her dedication, talent and great sense of humor working for our team. Thank you, Jenna Williams for all you have done and all you continue to do. It with great honor I present to you the 2018 Chapter Meritorious Award! In addition to this certificate, Jenna will receive a plaque from National AMTA, which will be presented during the AMTA ‘s 75th National Convention this August in Washington, DC. William Brurton (instructor) and conference attendees gather for the evening festivities at the 2018 Spring Conference. A great time was had by all members.

The trained touch Page 11 amta South Dakota Chapter Membership Spotlight Name: Brittney Priebe City: Huron, SD Family: Todd & Connie (parents, Nitto & Nova (pets), Randy (significant other) How long have you been doing massage? Since September 2017 How long have you been an AMTA Member? (please list any volunteer positions you may have held and/or currently hold) November 2016 What has been/is your favorite memory as an AMTA Member? Making so many new friends, massage therapists aren’t overly competitive and they all encourage each other. What got you interested/started in Massage Therapy? Always interested in healthcare but wanted to be more proactive and give people an alternative to try before going to a doctor for medicine. What is your favorite technique? I like combining techniques into one massage. I enjoy customizing each massage for the client. What is your biggest challenge as a therapist? Waiting to see the results with clients. Sometimes there is no quick fix to a problem and it just takes multiple sessions which can discourage the client. What is your best memory of being a massage therapist? I had a rancher come in because his wife made him and I helped his sciatica. He was surprised that I helped so much. He now refers others to me! What would you tell new people coming into massage therapy? Always take care of yourself too. You cannot help or take care of others when you are drained. What are your hobbies and other interests? We are always out with our pups playing in the yard and going for motorcycle rides around town. Is there anything else you would like to share? (Something nobody knows about you or would be surprised to know about you): I always considered massage but didn’t commit to school until my grandmother got sick and touch was a huge comfort and at times was a way of communication with her.
