Equal Housing Opportunity. by more than $260,000 in campaign money and ran for reelection during a year that was not kind to Republicans in Massachusetts and across the country. But when the unofficial results came in from the three communities that are part of the Ninth Essex District, the 74-yearold Saugus Republican proved he is still unbeatable. Wong breezed to victory, winning by more than 1,800 votes over his Democratic challenger, Lynn City Councilor Pete Meaney, to claim his ninth two-year term on Beacon Hill. Wong, who campaigns hard and never takes anything for granted, declined to issue a statement late Tuesday night (Nov. 3), even after the unofficial results were released for the eight Saugus precincts, showing him leading 5,370 to 3,473. The results for Wakefield and Lynn were not available late Tuesday night. “We don’t have all the numbers yet. So, I’ll wait until we do before commenting about the election results,” Wong said Tuesday night. Wong waited until about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday (Nov. 4) before commenting on the race. “I did get a call from him [Meaney]. He said ‘congratulations’ and I hope to be working with him and everybody else in my next two years. I am deeply honored to serve the Ninth District for another term,” Wong said. “I look forward to the next two years working on issues I feel are extremely important with local officials as well as my colleagues in the House of Representatives,” he said. Wong expressed gratitude to his supporters. “I have a lot of loyal supporters and friends. And we’ve worked hard together on this campaign. Right now, parties are not important. It’s about coming together and crossing the aisle and working together for the communities I represent,” he said. The Saugus Advocate reached out to Meaney for comment on the race. “We gave it a good shot. It didn’t work out the way we wanted it to.
