VOLLEYBALL EARNS EMOTIONAL FIRST VICTORY OVER SWAMPSCOTT Seventeen losses. Plenty of frustration. And finally, a victory worth celebrating. The Saugus High School volleyball team delivered its biggest moment of the season Monday, Oct. 26, defeating tournament-bound Swampscott, 3-2, in a five-set thriller that coach Mikayla Niles said represented everything her players had worked toward. Saugus won the opening set, dropped the second, took the third, lost the fourth and finally prevailed, 15-12, in the deciding fifth set. The victory improved the Sachems to 1-17 and avenged a 3-1 loss to Swampscott earlier this season. “It was like, ‘Are we gonna’ get a win?” Niles said. “Are we gonna’ not win anything all year? … Even though it’s like you don’t want to think about it, it is in the back of your head, and it is a weight on your chest. It’s almost like a huge weight is lifted off. You A returning runner from last season, Cole Gosselin has proven that hard work pays off. She said her varsity teams had never beaten Swampscott, a longtime competitive rival. “We went five sets. The sets were all super close, within five points of each other. We won the fifth set, 15-12,” Niles said. The decisive set featured a clutch serving performance from Luis Fung Chen, who helped Saugus overcome a late deficit and reach match point. Swampscott ultimately served the final ball out of bounds, setting off the celebration. Fung Chen also delivered a strong defensive performance throughout the match. Arianna Chianca stepped up in the fourth set and into the fifth, producing timely kills, tips and well-placed shots. Niles praised her court awareness and ability to find openings in Swampscott’s defense. Senior captain Aiyana Cruz also earned praise for battling through an illness that had affected her for two weeks. Cruz played all five sets, demonstrating the determination Niles said characterized the entire roster. Returning this year, Eric Jiang’s consistency shows up and does everything his coaches say without question.
