Both Amy and Duke, as well as their families, were dedicated to Saugus Youth Soccer and left a lasting impact on our soccer community. Amy Meuse was a 2005 Saugus High School graduate who grew up in the Saugus Youth Soccer program. Amy was an outstanding goalie who went on to play at the collegiate level at Endicott College. Her entire family was involved in Saugus Youth Soccer, including her two younger brothers who played, and her mother who was actively involved with the board. After Amy’s heartbreaking passing in May of 2025, her family chose to honor her legacy by having donations in her name be designated to Saugus Youth Soccer. A generous donation was collected and is being used for scholarships to allow all youth players the opportunity to play regardless of financial status. Marc Magliozzi, SYSA president, spoke a few words about the meaning behind the benches at our field and why we chose to honor these two legends in this way. Liz Venezia, a current SYSA coach and board member, was given the honor to say a few words at the dedication. “I was fortunate enough to grow up playing soccer with Amy, from youth soccer through high school soccer and even in an adult women’s league. I lived with her freshman year at Endicott while she played collegiate soccer. It didn’t surprise me when I heard that Amy’s family wanted donations in her memory to go to Saugus Youth Soccer; a place her entire family was involved with for many years. I am now at this field five days a week between coaching, directing and watching my own kids play, and I love looking over and seeing the bench in Amy’s honor. With their generosity many athletes will be able to play soccer and, hopefully, enjoy the sport even just a fraction of the amount she did. I am lucky to have called Amy a friend and teammate.” REMEMBERING DUKE: The late Duke McLaughlin’s wife Carol sits on a bench dedicated to her husband, joined by her sister Sheila. Prior to his passing, Duke could often be found on the sidelines cheering on not only his own family members, but all of the SYSA athletes. Mike Bluette, current SYSA travel director and coach, spoke a few words about Duke and his presence at the field. “I’ll always fondly remember Duke sitting under the trees at Anna Parker, cheering on not only his grandchildren, Kyle and Hailey, but all their teammates as if they were his own. I believe he saw every child as part of his extended family. He also shared wonderful stories about the people he met, the places he visited and the restaurants he enjoyed with his wife. He was a generally great guy who was always fun and interesting to talk to.” These two benches will serve as a lasting reminder of Amy and Duke and the special place they will always hold in the SYSA family.
