Especially in moist locations at the foot of Breakheart Hill and along the Saugus riverbank, the native shrub known as summersweet or coastal sweet pepperbush (Clethra alnifolia) blooms through much of July and August, as it does throughout most of New England and many coastal areas from Nova Scotia to Florida. In the woods these shrubs often grow up to 8 feet tall, but popular cultivars are generally shorter and include several dwarf forms, which rarely exceed 4 feet in height, and ‘Ruby Spice,’ which usually grows 6 feet tall. These shrubs can grow well in sun or shade, and like the rose mallow they like slightly more moist than average soils. Wild ones and some cultivated varieties usually have white flowers, but there are also occasionally pink flowers, including the popular nursery variety ‘Ruby Spice.’ Even when summer has ended and all the blossoms gone by, summersweet provides a nice yellow fall foliage color. Interesting seed heads that resemble peppercorns remain through the winter. Please save the date!
