Pace & Son celebrated their 60th anniversary last Friday afternoon with their vendor Di Nonna on hand. Saugus resident Terri Dello Russo, who has been a customer for decades, said she has never had a bad day coming there. Her husband Jerry’s favorite is the chicken Italiano and the wonderful cashiers. He said Di Nonna’s applesauce tastes like apple pie. Saugus resident Rita Pelosi has been a customer since 1963. “The quality of the food is outstanding,” Pelosi said. “I like the sandwiches and desserts when I have company.” Susan Pelosi traveled from San Francisco, California, for their Scali bread. “It’s a great store,” Pelosi said. J. Pace & Son owner Angela Pace attributed success to her late husband, Joseph. “He was the hardest worker,” Pace said. “He was unforgettable.” J. Pace & Son President Cara Pace said her father founded their North End location in 1966. “He loved feeding people,” Cara Pace said. “We want to keep his dedication going.” Di Nonna Chief Operating Officer Joseph Angelo helped to hand out their famous applesauce with cinnamon. “We’ve been a vendor for three years,” Angelo said. “It’s been a fantastic business partnership.” Di Nonna Chief Executive Officer Rosemary Saggesse said they were the first to make applesauce with cranberries and San Marzano cocktail sauce. The Saugus company has been in operation for five years. Angelo said J. Pace is clearly an icon in Saugus, and that Joseph Pace was one of the kindest, hardest working people that he’s ever met. Saugus resident David Savoie said he has always loved J. Pace. His favorite dish to purchase is salmon, cod, swordfish — and for subs — chicken parmesan, cheesesteak and chicken Italiano. “I’ve been coming here for years,” Savoie said.
