Vogler T he Town of Saugus has a balance of $403,151 in opioid abatement funds – money it could be using to help fight the opioid addiction problem in the community. Saugus has spent $66,887 – about 14 percent of the funds it had gathered – according to a state website that monitors the use of Massachusetts Opioid Settlement Fund money. “The Town of Saugus is proud to have taken the first steps towards helping its residents overcome issues with recovery and look forward to continued efforts and collaboration with other established programs in surrounding municipalities,” the town notes in comments on the website, in assessing the progress of the local programs. Equal Housing Opportunity. cial, Precinct 2 Town Meeting Member Matthew Parlante, is not satisfied with that assessment and questions whether the town is doing enough to make use of the funds at its disposal. “I’ll be honest that some of this is hard for me to reconcile: two overdoses in one family in a single month, a Saugus student overdosing in another community with what looks like no follow-up, and a program that’s used less than 15 percent of the funding available to it,” Parlante wrote in an email this week to Town Manager Scott C. Crabtree. “What matters most to me is that residents actually have access to the resources that exist for them, and right now it feels like there’s real capacity sitting unused while people are struggling.
