Decareau’s Burlington home and asked him what it’s like to finally get the high school diploma he sacrificed during World War II so he could serve his country in the U.S. Navy. Decareau, 95, received an honorary diploma from the School Committee last week during a special ceremony at the Roby School Administration Building. As an official member of the Saugus High School Class of 2019, he welcomes the invitation he received to participate in the graduation ceremony set for Friday, May 31. Decareau was only 17 when he sought his father’s written permission in 1942 to enlist in the Navy. He’s one of nine siblings – five boys and two girls.
