Eugene: A couple of years, probably. He died young. Q: So, 67 years of friendship, marriage, love… How did you make it work that long? Arlene: I knew you were going to ask that. Eugene: Don’t think it was easy! There’s been ups and downs, baby. Arlene: We go to church a lot. That’s a good reason why we stayed together; we go to church. God has been good. Q: Where do you go to church? Arlene: We went to Cliftondale but they closed the church. Now we’re going to the Congregational Church [First Congregational Church-UCC Saugus]. Eugene: You want a real intimate story? Q: Is this related to your marriage? Eugene: Yeah. In a letter-to-the editor published in last week’s Saugus Advocate, Ellen Santosuosso questioned the scheduling logistics for holding the citizens meeting on the same day of the Massachusetts presidential primary. “The polls are still open at the time of the workshop. Poor planning; I certainly think so,” Santosuosso wrote. “I am working at the polls from 2 to closing. I can’t be S there. Just putting it out there. Thanks,” she said. At Tuesday night’s meeting, selectmen acknowledged seeing Santosuosso’s letter and decided the meeting date and time should be changed. “The Board of Selectmen has rescheduled the citizen input meeting originally slated for March 3 to listen to ideas and suggestions on goals for Saugus to February 25th, 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium of Town Hall,” Selectman Corinne Riley wrote an email to The Saugus Advocate on Wednesday. “We look forward to listening to everyone and hope for a great turnout,” Riley said. Citizen involvement and more transparency was a centerpiece of Riley’s political campaign last fall and continues to be on her agenda. Riley initially conceived the idea session as a public workshop for selectmen to discuss various goals for the town. But selectmen decided that it would be better to shift the focus of the meeting to citizens’ goals rather than board members’ goals. That discussion will be the subject of a future workshop. Do you have some good ideas for improving your town and local government? If so, come share them at the Feb. 25 citizen input meeting.
