Her education at Nichols College has also provided opportunities to gain valuable handson experience. Through a career and internship fair on campus, she connected with representatives from the Nantucket Police Department and learned about its Community Service Offi cer (CSO) program. After applying and completing a virtual interview, she was off ered a position with the department. “The CSO program includes three patrol units: foot, bicycle, and beach patrol. I was selected for beach patrol, where my responsibilities included patrolling beaches on an ATV, promoting public safety, enforcing beach permit regulations, monitoring open-container laws, and providing first aid when necessary,” Janaisa explained. “This experience provided an invaluable opportunity to work alongside law enforcement professionals and see fi rsthand the responsibilities involved in protecting the public.” Another memorable educational experience was attending the Global Security Exchange (GSX) Conference in Atlanta. The conference introduced her to the wide range of career opportunities available in the security industry. “I participated in informational sessions, explored the trade fl oor, and connected with professionals and business leaders in the security field. The opportunity was made possible through a scholarship established by the Dunbar family. James Dunbar, a Nichols College graduate and creator of Dunbar security trucks, established the scholarship to help Nichols students attend the annual conference. Following his passing, his son continued the family’s commitment to supporting students,” Janaisa added. The experience allowed her to expand her knowledge of the security industry, develop professional connections and explore potential career opportunities. As graduation approaches, she has a clear vision for her future. She plans to pursue a career in law enforcement, although she is still deciding whether to work at the local or state level. “I want to build a career where I can make a positive diff erence, help others, and contribute to keeping communities safe,” she shared. Reflecting on her college experience, she credits Nichols College with providing opportunities for academic, professional and personal growth. “From participating in the Honors Program to gaining Revere native Janaisa Mendoza, a 2023 graduate of Revere High and current Nichols College senior. real-world experience and attending professional conferences, I feel these experiences have helped prepare me for the next chapter of my life.” A proud Revere native, former State Championship cheerleader, and dedicated criminal justice student, she is demonstrating that hard work, determination and a commitment to helping others can open doors to an exciting future. With graduation in May 2027 on the horizon, her journey from Revere to a career in law enforcement is just beginning.
