That the weather at tomorrow’s 134th Malden-Medford Thanksgiving Day football game at Macdonald Stadium in Malden is forecast to be picture-perfect – mostly sunny with a high of 55 degrees – welcome news for those attending the game, which should draw a bigger crowd than usual. **** That anyone who would like a hot meal and some company is invited to come to the “Don’t Be Alone for Thanksgiving Dinner” at the Malden High School cafeteria tomorrow, Thanksgiving Day, November 25, from noon until 2:00 p.m. Many volunteers will serve anyone who would like to attend a full-course turkey dinner with “all the fixins.” Come one, come all! **** That Malden Square motorists are elated over the spiffy repaving of Exchange Street, a key artery in the downtown area which runs parallel to Pleasant Street, as, with the new roadwork, it went from one of the bumpier major Malden thoroughfares to one of its smoothest. **** That two very generous Malden High School alumni – Bobby Sager, Class of 1972, and David Slaine, Class of 1978 – made major monetary donations to the Golden Tornado Club in honor of their friend Michael Byrne’s induction into the Golden Tornado Hall of Fame at a sold-out Malden Moose Hall on Saturday night. Nearly 300 were in attendance. **** That for the first time since the 1990s, there will not be a Parade of Holiday Traditions in Malden this year, which is usually held the Saturday after Thanksgiving. **** That the Malden High School Athletic Department is giving a “Hats Off!” to the Urbaczewski Family, owners of the Dockside Restaurant (229 Centre St.), which is serving pregame breakfast to the entire Malden High School football team and coaches before the big game tomorrow. **** That there will be a Winter Festival in Malden Square, all along Pleasant Street from 10:00 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, December 4, set up much like the popular Summer Festivals, which grew into one of the most popular additions to our city calendar in some time. **** That there will be No School for the Malden Public Schools tomorrow, Thanksgiving Day, or Friday, November 26, due to the holiday, and all students will be dismissed early today at 11:00 a.m. Classes will resume on Monday, November 29. **** That the Diwali Festival of Lights was held with excitement and enthusiasm in the Malden High School cafeteria on Sunday evening with a large crowd, including Malden Mayor Gary Christenson, who participated in the lighting ceremony. **** That due to a typographical error in Saturday night’s Golden Tornado Club Hall of Fame program, generous club benefactor and Hall of Famer Lester Morovitz was incorrectly listed by asterisk as deceased, as he most certainly is not. **** That the seniors and coaches of the Malden High and Medford High football teams were the guests of honor at a luncheon hosted by the Malden and Medford Rotary Clubs last Thursday at Pearl Street Station Restaurant (53 Summer St., Malden) in recognition of the upcoming 134th Malden-Medford Thanksgiving Day football game. **** That the Rotary luncheon is an annual event, returning this year after being cancelled due to COVID-19 in 2020. **** That another annual Malden-Medford Football Game luncheon that resumed this year is the luncheon hosted at John Brewer’s Tavern (7 Highland Ave., Malden, right at the Medford city line). Senior players and coaches as well senior cheerleaders from Malden High and Medford High will be guests of the Honeycutt Family, owners of John Brewer’s. The Malden-Medford football memorabilia at the tavern is something to behold. **** That the newest addition to the Malden Square business landscape, Starbucks – on the corner of (newly paved!) Exchange Street and Commercial Street – is doing a booming business to date, about a month after it opened. **** That the Malden Police and Fire Departments are combining forces on a citywide Toy Drive with new, unwrapped toys accepted at the Malden Police Station (500 Eastern Ave. [Route 60]). By The Advocate E very year, with the exception of the 2019-2020 Covid pandemic years, the Everett Kiwanis Club and the neighboring Malden Kiwanis Club host their annual high school football luncheon the week of the two teams’ meeting on the gridiron. The guest speaker was New Balance Baseball Product Manager Matt Nuzzo, who is a former four-year starting quarterback for Everett High School. The student-athletes enjoyed a delicious pasta lunch with eggplant and chicken parmesan and listened to Nuzzo as he spoke about comradery on and off the football field and honoring those relationships throughout your life.
