How about… EVERYTHING! ‘Must win’ on the road (6:00 p.m. kickoff) as MIAA Playoff bid, GBL Championship win are both on the line By Steve Freker S o, what’s at stake tonight when Head Coach Witche Exilhomme’s Malden High football team travels to Dilboy Stadium in Somerville to take on the Highlanders (6:00 p.m. kickoff)? That’s easy: EVERYTHING! The high school football calendar has changed a bit since the playoff format has been remade a few times over the past decade. But three “must have” team goals appear on the Malden High football “To-Do List” every season, written there by every Golden Tornado head coach, for nigh on 60 years now, dating back to the late Paul Finn in the 1970s: FOOTBALL | SEE PAGE 7 617-387-2200 Friday, October 30, 2026 GET OUT AND VOTE: U.S. Senator Markey seeks final term, Governor Healy in reelection bid on Tuesday, Nov. 3 U.S. Rep. Page 2 THE MALDEN ADVOCATE–Friday, October 30, 2026 Maldonians have been able to vote for Ed Markey for over 50 years; on Tuesday, it will be for the last time By Steve Freker E d Markey and Malden have been a comfortable fit for well over half a century. In a remarkable bit of political history, perhaps a bit of a unicorn here in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Malden voters have been able to find his name on their voting ballots for, well, over 50 years. Simply put, whether it was “WE’RE STILL HERE!” Since 1947 MALDEN AUTO BODY Book online: Maldenauto.com 49 Robin St., Everett, MA 617-389-3030 * Maldenab@yahoo.com Over 79 years of exceptional service! Massone Family Owned & Operated for his initial office of Malden state representative in 1974, then nearly 40 years as a U.S. Representative in Congress and for the past 13 years as a U.S. Senator, one would have to be 70 years of age or older to say they voted for Ed Markey in every election. A total of 32 times Senator Markey’s been on the ballot in Malden, be it in a Primary Election or General Election, and we just know there are some still residing in this community who could definitely (and we bet, proudly) state they have voted for him in every election. That is why this coming General Election, four days away on Tuesday, is dramatically different. There is a finality attached U.S. Senator Ed Markey to it, a “final chapter” edge, if you will. For the first time in over a half-century, Senator Markey — an iconic progressive Democratic flagbearer and household name in Washington, D.C. — has made it clear that this indeed WILL be the final chapter, his last term of elected office if he should prevail and defeat Republican John Deaton. It would be Senator Markey’s final six-year term of a storied political career. It will also be the last time Malden residents can cast a vote for Ed Markey. For the past two Senate elections, Senator Markey, who turned 80 on the campaign trail over this past summer, has had to fend off direct and indirect challenges based on his age from opponents. He has counteracted with basically the “age is just a number” response. “I have never had more energy or motivation to continue to serve in this office as I do right now,” has been Senator Markey’s goto mantra, and we challenge anyone to disprove it. No one can accurately describe Senator Markey as anything but energetic, lively, positive and passionate — whether you agree with his politics or not. Senator Markey will be 86 at the conclusion of this term, if, as expected, he rolls to another big victory. But there will be no more campaign trail treks, political debates or any more challengers taking aim at his birthdays. On Tuesday, whether the turnout is low, high or somewhere in the middle, more than a few Malden voters will be supporting Ed Markey in the ballot box just one more time. Donato, Democrat, is facing challenger James C. Seibel, a Republican. BALLOT QUESTIONS DRAWING INTEREST On Tuesday, Massachusetts voters will decide nine binding statewide questions, the most ever placed on a Massachusetts ballot. They are the following: Question 1: Applying public records law to the Legislature and Governor’s Office. Question 2: Union rights for the state’s public defenders. Question 3: Replacing party primaries with a single all-party primary. Question 4: Should voters be allowed to register on election day? Question 5: Making automatic tax refunds more frequent and less predictable. Question 6: An earmark for conservation and recreation. Question 7: Single-Family Housing. A yes vote would generally allow single-family homes on residential lots of at least 5,000 square feet that meet frontage, water and sewer requirements. Municipalities could still regulate features, including height, parking and setbacks. A no vote would make no change. Question 8: Recreational Marijuana Sales. A yes vote would repeal the legal, regulated retail market for recreational marijuana while continuing to allow limited adult possession. A no vote would preserve the current marijuana law. Question 9: Firearms Law. A yes vote would keep the state’s 2024 firearms law in place, including provisions covering ghost guns, assault-style weapons and extreme-risk protection orders. A no vote would repeal the law. *** Where to vote in Malden on Election Day Following are the locations of Malden polling places to vote on Tuesday, November 4. No, it’s the one and only Nicky Angelo!” An August article mentioned how Nick “Keeper of the Edgeworth Flame” Angelo had been to every single Saint Rocco Feast starting in 1929 to present day. In a make-believe interview I had with Nicky recently, he recounted how 1929 was an extraordinary year in his life. The Wall Street Crash of 1929 had brought a worldwide Great Depression; money was tight. Ever the entrepreneur/opportunist, that didn’t stop Nicky from placing a wager on the outcome of the 1929 World Series. Nick had a paper route and although the rest of the world was hurting, Nick was a hustler and had a little gelt in his railroad pants pockets (he told me the Gold Star Café, the Rosebud, Maher’s Cafe, and DeMarco’s Café were his best customers). Nick loved the Cubbies that year and their mythic slugger, Hack Wilson. His $1.75 wager disappeared in five games as Athletics Manager Connie Mack outwitted the Cubs in just the 26th World Series action ever. Depressed, the next day Nicky walked to Malden Square to Ye Olde Record Exchange on Irving Street and procured the latest release by Memphis Minnie, brought it home and moaned the blues until he wore that shellac out. According to Nick, 1929 went out with a little Christmas magic. As the holidays rolled around, Edgeworth was alive with Italian immigrants who brought more than their suitcases, recipes and grape-crushers from the old country. Nobody was left behind, and nobody went hungry. In 1929 Edgeworth, the spirit of generosity flowed freely — and so, I’ve been told, did the fruit of the vine! (Insert smiley face here.) For Nick, Christmas brought more than the Feast of the Seven Fishes, good friends and a little holiday cheer. It restored his faith in life, in his neighbors and in the goodness of people. And he made a solemn vow to turn over a new leaf in 1930: never gamble again! Of course, in Edgeworth, a gentleman’s word was his bond (right, Moe?)! At least until the next hand was dealt at the ITAMS! The spirit of the season was encapsulated years later by Dr. Seuss; “What if Christmas, he thought, doesn’t come from a store. What if Christmas…perhaps…means a little bit more!” Hi Nicky! Hope you enjoyed this. THE MALDEN ADVOCATE–Friday, October 30, 2026 Page 7 FOOTBALL | FROM PAGE 1 1) Beat Medford on Thanksgiving 2) Win the Greater Boston League Championship 3) Qualify for the MIAA Playoffs and compete for the Super Bowl Championship in the postseason. Well, for the first time in about a decade, Malden High has positioned itself to challenge for all three of ’em! But the obstacle in their way happens to be this team named “Somerville High,” whom Malden faces Friday night. Somerville (3-4) happens to be ranked 17th in the MIAA Division 3 Power Rankings list, which determines which teams get to participate in the playoffs. Malden has its highest rating in many years, at this late date in October — 20th overall — on the newest chart, released Tuesday. (See chart on this page.) Malden’s best start in 20 years at 5-2 Following its fifth win, based on Friday’s night forfeit to the Golden Tornados by Manchester-Essex HS, Malden rises to 5-2 overall. The 5-2 mark represents Malden High football’s best season start in 21 seasons — since former Head Coach Rich Cullen’s squad started off 6-2 and finished 9-2 overall and, coincidentally, NOT GBL Champs. If Malden beats Somerville tonight, it will do the following: —Equal that best start in 21 years —Put the Golden Tornado Football team with a realistic shot at the 2026 Greater Boston League Championship, needing a win over Medford on Thanksgiving Day to vie for the GBL Crown —Put Malden square in the path of clinching a spot in the “Top 16” of the MIAA Division 3 Power Rankings, where it has to be to be seeded in the playoff field This is big stuff for the Tornados and would be Coach Exilhomme’s first playoffs since he took over at the start of the 2021 campaign. “We set those same goals every season and our players know what is on the line for us on Friday night,” Coach Exilhomme said. “We were ready to get that win Friday night, but they [Manchester-Essex] were not able to get enough healthy Malden picked up forfeit win from Manchester-Essex “That decision [to forfeit to Malden] did not hurt us as we have an extra week for some of our injured and recovering players to get back in the mix,” the Malden coach added. “We welcome those guys back for this [Somerville] game.” Two of those players are big “re-entries” to the Tornado lineup: senior 6-3, 355 lb. two-way lineman Noah Staggs and senior defensive back Josh Bly. Staggs has been out of action for the past four games since sustaining a leg injury in Week Three; Bly has missed the last three games with an ankle injury. Malden is led by the rushing of record-setting junior Jayden McGuffie on offense. McGuffie broke the 200-yard rushing mark for a game for the 12th time in 27 games played (also a school record) against Chelsea two weeks ago and rose to 910 yards rushing in just six games with 197 yards rushing and 3 TDs against Lynn Classical last week. Malden’s McGuffie breaks 4,000-yard rushing mark for his career Having already broken the 4,000-yard mark for his career, McGuffie improved to 4,434 yards on 496 carries in 27 games played. McGuffie also leads the state in Division 3 scoring with 88 points (12 TDs and 8 2X conversions). With the win, Malden improved to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in the GBL. Senior co-captain Josh Dionne is Malden’s first-year starting quarterback. The Malden defense — led by senior linebacker Jamaurie Brown, junior linebacker Ryan Vieira and senior captains Dante Bell at defensive back and Noah Granderson at defensive line — have stood out tall over the past two weeks in leading Malden to the pair of GBL victories. Senior running backs Arioc Akre and Divine Victory Nkudu have helped Malden build some depth on offense as well. Akre has scored touchdowns in each of the past three Malden games, one on a 65-yard kickoff return TD against Everett. Somerville comes into tonight’s game at 3-4, coming off the heels of a dramatic finish in a heartbreaking loss to GBL power Everett (6-1) this past Friday night, 2827. Somerville had pulled within a point on the strength of a TD plunge by senior 6-1, 225 RB Marcos Pineda. Firefighters from seven other communities responded to the fire scene as part of Malden’s mutual aid network, assisting in firefighting operations alongside local fire companies. One Malden firefighter was reported hurt at the scene and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of minor injuries and released. Malden firefighters were summoned to the scene at about 9:45 a.m. Friday and reported the triple-decker home at 85 Porter St. was fully engulfed in flames in the rear of the residence, on the back porches. A second alarm was sounded immediately, followed by a third alarm when the flames appeared to be spreading to adjacent structures. Other firefighting apparatus from other communities, such as Everett, Revere, Saugus and Chelsea, quickly began to arrive. In all, some 14 communities provided mutual aid, with firefighters MUSINGS | FROM PAGE 6 more thing, sir” — Howdy! I’m The Old Ranger and Death Valley aka Maldonia is my old stampin’ ground. Manys the tale of adventure I’m going to tell you about the Death Valley country — true stories, mind you. I can vouch for that! Did you know that... there is this thing that goes on in our sister city of Maldon aka Maeldun, England, every single year? It is Eastern England’s annual “Maldon Mud Race,” and it had its beginnings way back in 1974. (Digression time: I was a junior at MHS in ’74 and sadly, we spent more time at Joe & Nemo’s, Schopell’s, IHOP, Jack in the Box and Jack Haney’s Bar & Grille than we did in class!) It’s an annual charity race held in the spring at Promenade Park in Maldon, Essex, England, where entrants compete to complete a 550-yard dash in thick mud over the bed of the River Blackwater. The race can only take place when the tide is low enough to allow participants to cross the river safely. By Jove, that is cracking! Hardy locals start from one bank and make their way to the other side, negotiating 275 yards of mud along the river, and then return to the original riverbank. as firefighters on scene. The Red Cross workers immediately went to work assisting the displaced Porter Street residents with potential shelter destinations, which they prioritize at fire scenes. “We saw heavy fire in the A Malden firefighter sustained minor injuries at the scene and left via an ambulance to be treated. We did a quick primary search of the building to make sure everybody was out, but there was just overlapping fire in the rear of the building.” “You’ll see in the rear that [the Flames engulfed the rear porches of the three-family home that was destroyed in a four-alarm fire at 85 Porter St. last week. In addition, Malden Fire Department officials reported firefighter crews and apparatus from Winchester, This year’s race took place on April 26 so if you’re in merry old England next April or so, give it a go, as they say in Old Blighty. Sounds like a silly tradition but I am positive the Saint Rocco Grease Pole would also sound mighty silly to our brothers and sisters in Maldon, England! One last smiley face. Postscript 1: Speaking of Lino, both he and his cousin Rocco (Saracini) joined our merry little gang of misfits and hooligans back in the late 1960s straight from the mother country, Italy. Long story short, welcomed (of course) into the Devir/Edgeworth gang immediately, both brought the game of futbol aka soccer into our lives. We played every sport imaginable. But soccer. Both inspired a generation of soccer players, such as Dave Surette, Dave Angelo (all-star goalie, btw), Johnny Cagno, Bobby Bellavia, Kevin Cullen, Tommy Cronin, Mike Ploumbidis, Jeff “Big Jeff” Thompson and Dave Twohig. Postscript 2: The Bell Inn on Lowell Street in Peabody was the place to be last Wednesday night as the Boston Horns’ Henley Douglas Jr. took center stage in their underground speakeasy bar. Henley killed it on sax Woburn, Chelsea and Wakefield also were in Malden during firefighting operations, covering local fire stations during the fire. Also on scene were EMT crews from Malden-based Cataldo Ambulance as well as personnel from all night long, blowing us away with great solo after great solo. I didn’t realize how much I missed his masterful playing until he and the rest of the trio bust out into “On the Sunny Side of the Street.” I almost got up to dance! Almost. These cats can flat out play. They’ll be having a once-amonth residency at the Bell Inn, so go see them nice and make sure you throw gelt in the tip jar. While you are there say hello to my grandson Christian: working part-time in his first job while matriculating at Peabody High as a junior. Postscript 3: Of course there is a Malden connection. Back in 1993 when Henley and the Heavy Metal Horns ruled Boston up and down the North Shore, they toured worldwide with Extreme as their horn section on Extreme’s third album, “III Sides to Every Story.” More on this super talented musician in the future. This emotionally engaging, funny and compelling film charts John Davidson’s Tourette’s diagnosis at the age of 14 years old. The victory improved Mystic Valley’s overall record to 11–2 while keeping the Eagles undefeated in Commonwealth Athletic Conference (CAC) play. Mystic Valley came out firing from the opening whistle, applying early offensive pressure. The Eagles broke through when Christian Saad connected with Carey Voorhees on a well-placed header, setting up the game’s opening goal and giving Mystic Valley a 1–0 advantage. Nashoba responded as the first half progressed, capitalizing on an opportunity to even the score at 1–1 heading into halftime. The Eagles wasted little time regaining control after the break. Yazan Abuzaid put Mystic Valley back in front with a goal off an assist from Isac DeAlmeida. Page 10 THE MALDEN ADVOCATE–Friday, October 30, 2026 Savvy Senior by Jim Miller When Home Care Isn’t Enough Dear Savvy Senior, My mother has several chronic health conditions and needs a home caregiver to help with daily activities. I know she wants to stay at home as long as possible, but how do I know when it’s time to consider an assisted living facility or nursing home? --Exhausted Daughter Dear Exhausted, Most older adults hope to remain in their own home as long as possible, and with the right support many can. But there may come a point when home care is no longer enough to meet a person’s medical, safety or social needs. While moving to an assisted living facility or nursing home is never easy, recognizing the warning signs early can help you avoid a crisis and make the transition less stressful. If you answer “yes” to several of the following questions, it may be time to start exploring other care options. Is home care becoming too expensive? Eight to 10 hours of care a day, seven days a week, can easily cost $100,000 a year or more. That’s well above the median annual cost of a one-bedroom assisted living apartment (about $70,000), though still less than a private room in a nursing home (about $128,000), according to Genworth’s Cost of Care Survey. Does she need more medical care? If your mother needs ongoing nursing care or frequent medical monitoring, a nursing home may be the better choice. If she mainly needs help with daily activities, assisted living may be enough. Is she falling, forgetting medications or going to the hospital more often? Frequent falls, medication mistakes and repeated hospitalizations are often signs that living at home is becoming unsafe. Does she have dementia? Wandering, confusion or unsafe behaviors can make home care increasingly difficult. Memory care communities provide a secure environment and specially trained staff. Does it take two people to help her? If she needs two people to assist with transfers, bathing or toileting, both the cost and safety risks of home care rise significantly. Is her home still safe? Stairs, narrow bathrooms and the lack of features like grab bars or a walk-in shower can increase the risk of falls. Home modifications may help, but they aren’t always enough. Is she isolated or neglecting personal care? Loneliness, poor nutrition, weight loss, or neglecting bathing and grooming can all signal that she needs more support than can realistically be provided at home. Is caregiving overwhelming? If you’re constantly worried, sleep-deprived or neglecting your own health, it may be time to consider a higher level of care. Planning ahead gives your family more choices and helps avoid making an important decision during a medical emergency. Keep in mind that Medicare generally doesn’t pay for long term stays in assisted living or nursing homes. It only covers limited skilled nursing care after a qualifying hospital stay. Understanding what Medicare covers and what it doesn’t can help you avoid costly surprises. If you’re unsure what level of care your mother needs, an Aging Life Care professional (aginglifecare.org) can assess her situation and recommend appropriate options. An initial assessment can cost $300 to $800 or more. You can also use a senior care advising service like A Place for Mom (aplaceformom.com), which provides free guidance because it is compensated by participating care communities. To research facilities, visit Caring. com. For Medicare-certified nursing homes, use Medicare’s Care Compare tool at Medicare.gov/ care-compare. You can also contact your local long-term care ombudsman (ltcombudsman.org) to learn about complaints or quality concerns involving facilities you’re considering. The best time to choose a care community is before a crisis forces the decision, giving your mother more choices and your family greater peace of mind. If income producing assets are O ne of the benefits of transferring certain types of assets to an irrevocable income only Trust is the protection of those assets in the event you or a spouse were to need long-term nursing home care or long-term care at home. MassHealth, if eligible, will pay for long-term nursing home care or long-term care at home under the Frail Elder Waiver Program. Assets held in an irrevocable Trust, five years after having placed the assets in the Trust, will not be a countable asset for MassHealth eligibility purposes. If you, as the Settlor of the Trust, are also the Trustee, you do not need permission from your children or any third party to sell the home that is placed in this Trust or even a non-retirement stock and bond portfolio placed into this Trust. If you select a child to serve as Trustee, you can retain the right to remove and replace placed into this Trust, you, as the Settlor, have the right to receive the net income generated by the Trust, such as net rental income from investment property or interest and dividend income from a non-retirement brokerage account. You cannot place a retirement account or Traditional IRA account into such a Trust. From a tax standpoint, most often, it would not make sense to cash out the retirement plan or Traditional IRA and then place the after-tax proceeds into the irrevocable income only Trust. If you place your principal residence into an irrevocable income only Trust, you will still be entitled to the $250,000 capital gains tax exclusion ($500,000 if married filing jointly). Some members of Congress are pushing for an increase in this capital gains tax exclusion amount in order to provide an incentive for homeowners with a large built-in gain to sell their home thereby freeing up badly needed housing inventory. This is one reason why single-family homes are so expensive. Upon your death, any appreciated real estate or stocks and bonds will achieve a step up in cost basis equal to the fair market value at the time of your death. If your children ended up selling the home for $1million dollars that you paid $250,000 for, there would be no capital gains taxes to pay. The new cost basis becomes $1million. A transfer of an asset into such a Trust does not represent a completed gift due to the Trust being structured as a grantor-type Trust for tax purposes thereby requiring no gift tax return to be filed. In addition, even though the Trust is irrevocable, including a provision in the Trust allowing the Settlor to exercise a special power of appointment would allow the Settlor to redirect to whom the Trust assets are to be distributed to upon the Settlor’s death. A Last Will and Testament would include the provision exercising that power of appointment which would require probating the Will. Although we most often look to avoid the probate process, in this situation, the Settlor at least retains the right to determine the ultimate distribution of the assets held in Trust due to changes in family circumstances.
