THE MALDEN ADVOCATE–Friday, October 16, 2026 Page 17 MUSINGS | FROM PAGE 6 — retired Winchester firefighter hero Johnny Surabian — having the time of his life. ● John’s Malden connection... he formerly hosted a music podcast (“Musicians and Beyond”) that recorded an episode or two at the sorely missed MATV — with well-known Maldonian Mark Lawhorne. John was also known to visit the long gone but iconic Highland Café on occasion. As Peter Falk’s iconic TV character Columbo would say, “Just one more thing, sir” — the New York Yankees of the 1920s and 30s had what was called “Murderer’s Row.” Malden in 2026 recently had their own version when I - LEGAL NOTICE - City of Malden Massachusetts INSPECTIONAL SERVICES 215 Pleasant Street, 3rd Floor Malden, Massachusetts 02148 (781) 397-7000 ext. 2030 MALDEN SITE PLAN REVIEW COMMITTEE PUBLIC HEARING The Malden Site Plan Review Committee will hold a public hearing in Malden City Hall, 215 Pleasant Street, Malden, MA, Mayor’s Conference Room, 4th Floor, at 6:00 P.M. on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, on the petition of Daniel McGrath of Berkeley Garbe LLC, on behalf of 200 Exchange Street II LLC, filed in Permit Application #CMID 0787492026 under Title 12, Code of the City of Malden, Section 12.12.500, seeking Site Plan Review and Site Plan Approval of a proposed child care facility, namely, KinderCare Education child-care facility, in the existing building at the property known as and numbered, 200 Exchange Street, Malden, MA, aand by City Assessor’s Parcel Identification #051 278 801. First up, I ran into recently retired Joe Walker, who apparently discovered the Fountain of Youth and, judging by his demeanor, is reluctant to share the location anytime soon (except maybe with Sal G)! Then I bumped into another recent retiree, George MacKay. Now, when George finally gets around to writing his autobiography, I’m predicting it will shoot straight to #1 on “The New York Times Best Sellers” list. It’ll be a must-read, believe me on that one. True fact — I’ll even stand in line for the signed first edition! Then, lo and behold, there was Sal Gennetti, who I’m beginning to suspect shares Joey’s secret Fountain of Youth formula. It sure was great seeing you guys. Retirement looks good on you, Joey and George! Keep enjoying it fellas! Keep smiling and keep making the rounds around the neighborhood. Some things never change, and thankfully, some people never do either. Postscript 1: Happy September birthday wishes to little brother, Frank. Through thick and thin, Frankie’s always been there. From the last days of the Boston’s old West End to Carney Court in Charlestown, all the way to Charles Street in Malden — or the “country,” as my mom used to call it when she was a young girl growing up in the North End — it certainly has been a long, crazy (expletive deleted) trip. Happy (mumble, mumble) birthday, Frankie. Malden, don’t forget, Frank is always looking for Malden postcards (real photo postcards to be precise). Insert smiley face. Postscript 2: In the “a picture is worth a thousand words” department...Doncha just love the photo that accompanies this article? Doesn’t take a genius to tell by this one visual how much Steve and Jackie loved each other. Soulmates for sure — two beautiful human beings finding that elusive love of their lives. Believe me, Malden will never be quite the same again. Postscript 3: From the “to say I love you right out loud” department...Again, Jaqueline Ann and Jesse, please accept my sincerest condolences. My love for both of your wonderful parents is from deep in my soul — Steve since childhood and Jackie since I was blessed upon her introduction into my life those many years ago. Postscript 4: On a lighter note... my fave memory of those longago days? When your parents first started dating and Jackie insisted Steve rid himself of the dreadful bamboo furniture he dragged back from the Philippines when his enlistment from the USAF was up. Steve did not hesitate. It was gone the next day. May their memories be a blessing.
