Page 4 THE MALDEN ADVOCATE–Friday, October 9, 2026 Seven years of creativity: The Gallery@57 celebrates on Oct. 17 S even years ago, a group of local artists and artisans took a chance on an idea: recreate a place in Malden where local artists could sell their work, connect with their neighbors and make art a visible part of the community. The idea began as a popup gallery, three years before. When that space was no longer available, they had to close, and it wasn’t clear whether The Gallery would ever have a permanent home. Then the City of Malden approached Marcel Schwab about a space at 57 Pleasant St. that might be affordable enough to make the dream possible. In October 2019, The Gallery@57 opened its doors. A few months later, the pandemic forced The Gallery to close again. Since reopening, the Gallery has faced another ongoing challenge: competing with bigbox stores and the extraordinary convenience of online shopmeaningful and handmade. Through its partnership with Creative Malden, The Gallery@57 has also become a place for the community to experience creativity. Over the years, the shop has hosted book readings, art demonstrations, exhibitions and artist receptions, live music and art and music festivals.
