THE MALDEN ADVOCATE–Friday, October 9, 2026 Page 15 BHRC | FROM PAGE 14 While we had hoped to avoid another strike, our teams have comprehensive plans in place, informed by our experience during the five-day work stoppage in July, to support continuity of care across Brigham and Women's Hospital." --- MGB spokesperson Jessica Pastore. "For ten years, we’ve listened closely to people living this experience. They’ve told us, time and again, that support needs to be there around the clock. What we’re offering now is a direct response to what they’ve asked for. It doesn’t replace the helpline — it extends it, so people feel supported whenever they need us." --- Victor Ortiz, director of the Office of Problem Gambling Services, commenting on a new mobile app for those seeking help for problem gambling. "If he'd taken that million dollars that he gave to the president and used it to to buy oil at the Strait of Hormuz and given it to the state, we would have been better off." ---House Speaker Ron Mariano criticizing Republican Mike Monogue, the Republican candidate for governor, for his past donations to President Donald Trump and the Republican National Committee. “It makes sense to support nuclear energy, and although it comes with a price, our study from earlier this year shows that New Englanders would still save between $400 billion and $700 billion by replacing planned wind and solar with a combination of nuclear and natural gas.” ---Paul Craney, executive director of the Mass Fiscal Alliance. HOW LONG WAS LAST WEEK’S SESSION? Beacon Hill Roll Call tracks the length of time that the House and Senate were in session each week. Many legislators say that legislative sessions are only one aspect of the Legislature’s job and that a lot of important work is done outside of the House and Senate chambers. They note that their jobs also involve committee work, research, constituent work and other matters that are important to their districts. www.cityofmalden.org Gary Christenson, Mayor Community Preservation Committee Agenda Critics say that the Legislature does not meet regularly or long enough to debate and vote in public view on the thousands of pieces of legislation that have been filed. They note that the infrequency and brief length of sessions are misguided and lead to irresponsible late-night sessions and a mad rush to act on dozens of bills in the days immediately preceding the end of an annual session. During the week of Sept. 28Oct. 2, the House met for a total of 15 minutes and the Senate met for a total of 17 minutes.
