The Mystic River Watershed Association (MyRWA) is raising awareness about multiple programs offering free trees to plant on your property this fall. One of the programs is the Greening the Gateway Cities MA Urban Canopy Project, which is for residents of Chelsea, Everett, Malden and Revere. You can learn more about these opportunities and sign up to receive a free tree at www. mysticriver.org/trees. The benefits of trees are not just aesthetic. Trees lower temperatures and provide shade, which helps communities weather increasingly hot summers. The most urban communities in greater Boston — with BOATHOUSE | FROM PAGE 1 the City, a steering committee, including Malden resident leaders of color, and a project team that includes urban designers and watershed and climate resilience planners. “The Malden River Works Steering Committee is grateful to the Bayrd Foundation for increasing our hope today by donating $500,000 toward our Phase 2 construction of a boathouse and salt shed,” said Malden River Works Steering Committee Chair Marcia Manong. “This grant is helping us get closer to the finish line.” The Malden River Works team is currently preparing for the grand opening of the “Phase 1” Malden River Works Park, which will be held on October 4 from 1-4 p.m. The park is located directly on the Malden River behind Malden’s Department of Public Works (DPW) building. “Phase 1” refers to the park’s horizontal construction, which is wrapping up now. This construction included excavation, soil remediation, the installation of underground drainage and stormwater treatment infrastructure, landscaping, a dock, play features and more. The second phase of construction, likely to begin in early 2027, pending funding, will include building The Bayrd Boathouse D the least tree cover — are often the hottest. These communities also tend to have the highest percentages of low-income residents and/or people of color. When MyRWA asked residents what changes they wanted to see to address this problem, trees were one of the top solutions. Trees bring other benefits beyond shade and cooling. They can improve air quality by absorbing pollutants, and tree roots soak up water, reducing the volume of polluted runoff into rivers and streams. Trees create habitat for beneficial birds, insects and other wildlife. More greenery in a community can also reduce stress and improve mental health. Finally, trees can save you money! While the boathouse will be primarily for Malden High School’s crew team, it will have public restrooms that will be available to all parkgoers. The City is also looking into public boating programs that will allow people to rent boats for use on the Malden River. Malden River Works visioning began in 2019 when the project received the inaugural Leventhal City Prize from MIT’s Norman B. Leventhal Center for Advanced Urbanism. This prize focuses on encouraging innovative urban design and planning strategies for equitable resilience. The award initiated a multiyear planning and fundraising campaign to create and finance the park, incorporating input from Malden residents. To date, the project has been entirely grant-funded, having received funding from 18 different federal, state, local and private grant programs. The park is designed for climate resilience, and more specifically, designed to solve the years-long flooding issue in the DPW yard. Climate resilience measures include a bioretention garden in front of the DPW building, over 250 new trees across 20+ native species, and over 80 species of other native plants. Park elevations were raised above the sea level rise projecduces energy usage, bringing down cooling and heating costs, and more greenery can increase property values. MyRWA is committed to building solutions so that all people across the watershed, no matter who you are or where you live, have safe and easy access to nature and a healthy environment. MyRWA is working with cities and towns to plant trees on public property, including parks, paths and parking lots. So far, the organization has helped plant over 1,000 shade trees, but resident tree planting is key to expanding the canopy even farther. Request a free tree today! The 76-square-mile Mystic River watershed stretches from Reading through the northern shoreline of Boston Harbor to tions for 2070, and the newly installed stormwater retention system can collect up to 14,055 cubic feet of water. The park is also designed to be a welcoming and accessible space to recreate. It includes a plaza and a flexible lawn area, as well as picnic tables, play areas, waterfront paths and a floating dock. The Mystic is now one of New England’s most densely populated, urbanized watersheds. MyRWA builds shared solutions so that all residents across the Mystic River watershed — no matter who you are — have safe and easy access to nature and a healthy environment. MyRWA believes that understanding the roots of current inequity, access to information and opportunities to learn about the natural world empower us all to work together for a better future in the Mystic River watershed.
