Lewis, who was first elected to the 5th Middlesex post in 2014. The 5th Middlesex District includes the communities of Malden, Melrose, Reading, Stoneham and Wakefield and parts of Winchester. The three candidates seeking to replace Lewis are state Rep. Kate Lipper-Garabedian (D-32nd Middlesex, Melrose, Malden, Wakefield), Malden Councillor-at-Large Carey McDonald and Malden Ward 4 Councillor Ryan O’Malley. Rep. Lipper-Garabedian’s 32nd Middlesex District includes all of Melrose, parts of Malden near the Malden-Melrose line (Ward 5, Precincts 2 and 3A) and parts of Wakefield (Precincts 4, 5 and 6). She was first elected in 2020 and is in her third term. A Malden resident and a Melrose resident are facing off in Tuesday’s Democratic primary to replace her in the 32nd Middlesex District. (See separate story.) Councillor McDonald was reelected to their third term as Malden Councillor-at-Large in 2025. This is their first campaign for a state office. Councillor O’Malley is also in his first campaign for state office, after being reelected to a sixth consecutive term as a Malden City Councillor. State Rep. Lipper-Garabedian was the first candidate to announce for the seat being vacated by Senator Lewis, less than 24 hours after Lewis let it be known he would not be seeking reelection to a seventh consecutive term, in late February this year. That made it a historic race, as it is the first time that two Malden residents have appeared on the same ballot for a state senate seat that represents the city of Malden. Lipper-Garabedian’s campaign themes have centered on climate change, public transit and infrastructure improvements in local communities using state resources. O’Malley has made improved public education through reform of the Chapter 70 state education funding platform, government accountability and protecting public assets his key campaign points. McDonald’s central campaign message has been about climate action, supporting immigrant communities, and economic justice. Senator Lewis, in his 12th year in the State House, has become one of the most wellknown politicians in the Commonwealth, with his work on some of Massachusetts’ most “hot button” state legislation, from educational funding to grassroots social issues, such as raising the age to buy tobacco from 18 to 21 and creating a state-supervised program for paid family medical leave. Senator Lewis was also one of the lead sponsors of raising Massachusetts’ minimum wage to $15 per hour.
