THE MALDEN ADVOCATE–Friday, August 21, 2026 ~ Malden Musings ~ Page 7 2026 Mac Singleton Senior Basketball League Week 2 By Peter Levine I t is said in Malden Musings... • Week 2 of the 2026 Mac Singleton Senior League regular season is in the books where games were taken indoors and played at the Forestdale School due to inclement weather. As well as a run league as I’ve seen in my many years in Malden both Dana (Brown) and I were impressed both with the quality of play and competitiveness of the youngsters. • Gobsmacked I was as I walked into that beautiful educational institution on Sylvan. So much so that I had to contact longtime friend and Principal at the Forestdale — Adam Weldai — to let him know what a fi ne job he is doing at this grand old place of learning; spotless with fl ags of the world adorning the lobby as well as a large painting of Martin Luther King to both inspire and educate the next generation. Good job, Adam! • And of course, a wonderfully thoughtful text received back from Mr. Weldai: “Thank you, Peter! We have such a great school community. Don’t tell him I’m using the Malden Musings nickname, but we are very lucky to have the best facilities team in the city, led by Dave “Buckets” Bouley - he’s truly the best. Mac Singleton in his Boston University football coaching days. Our TEAM is the best. Dave, (Joanne Settemio’s husband) Henry Figueroa, and Jovan Walcott who just joined us from Malden High this week. We couldn’t be luckier!” • Grandson Christian’s squad took another one on the chin, but CJ Falz once again made his presence known, snatching a couple of boards seemingly out of the rafters and with that long wingspan of his also making it uncomfortable for opposing players to get their shots off . If he continues to work hard this summer, he is sure to make Coach Thad Broughton’s varsity squad in October. • His opponent this night was the Dynasty Club coached by the “most active voice in show business,” James Hyppolite. James should have received the “6th Player Award” after the game because he certainly made his presence felt (on the court and off ). Roaming the sidelines for 40 nonstop minutes like a possessed demon — I haven’t seen that much intensity on the bench since Johnny Most made Tommy Heinsohn famous as Celt’s coach back in the ’70’s. Congrats, James, on a well-played game. I mean coached. Insert smiley face. • James has some “playas!” I didn’t get all their names, but I will for a future column. Two that impressed were the Turner brothers Kevin and Cole, who channeled the best of their families’ athletic skills (mom is Julie Wilcox and their pops Kevin) and were two Tasmanian Devils out on the court. Uncles Edward and Johnny would have been mighty proud of the way they played. • Number 11 had Dana and I shaking our heads in disbelief as he got off one 12-foot fl oater after another for easy hoops à la Phil Chenier for the Washington Bullets in the mid-1970s — a cool and calculated, pure shooter as we’ve ever seen at that age. • I asked Rec Director Joe Levine if any of the kiddos participating knew who Mac Singleton was. He shook his head sadly and said, “Not many.” If any of you youngsters are reading this, please do yourself a favor and Google Mac (James, this means you also!). You will be amazed at his life. • These were Joe’s feelings shortly after Mac passed in 2017: “Mac was one of a kind and one of the nicest individuals and best coaches I have ever met.” Joe had known Mac for more than 40 years and had worked with him in local youth programs for several years. “He just had a knack when dealing with people to bring out the best in them. We lost a great one...” Gerry D’Ambrosio Attorney-at-Law Is Your Estate in Order? Do you have an update Will, Health Care Proxy or Power of Attorney?
