THE MALDEN ADVOCATE–Friday, August 16, 2019 Page 3 Labor Day road race will honor former Mayor Jim Conway By Barbara Taormina I t’s time again for Malden runners to start gearing up for the city’s big race. The annual Irish American Labor Day Road Race is coming up, and this year’s event will be especially memorable for runners who have roots in Malden. “This year’s race is being run in honor of Jim Conway, the late, great mayor of Malden,” said Mike McCarthy, chairman of the event. Conway, who passed away on July 3, is known for his decades of public service and his boundless commitment to the city and its residents. In addition to his terms as the city’s 32nd and 34th mayor, Conway also served on the School Committee and the City Council and as Malden’s state rep. An avid fan of Malden school sports, Conway always seemed to find time to make it to games and events to cheer on the city’s young athletes. “People could talk about him and what he did for the city all day,” said McCarthy. “He was cherished by everyone in Malden.” This year’s Labor Day Road Race will start at 10 a.m. on Sept. 2 with registration beginning around 8:30 a.m. Runners can choose the 5K route or the 10K route, but both races will start and end at the Irish American Club in Malden. Runners can sign up for the race at coolrunning.com and the fee is $25. Those who sign up to run on the day of the race will pay a little extra, but all proceeds will go toward the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. “Every year, we’ve been able to raise about $5,000,” said McCarthy. After everyone has crossed the finish line, there will be a celebration at the Irish American Club with an awards ceremony and Irish music performed by Andy Healy. And there will be plenty of pizza, hot dogs and other refreshments, which McCarthy said is really Irish food without the potatoes. Now in its fourth year, the Irish American Labor Day Road Race is an official end-of-summer tradition in Malden. It’s a great chance to share some community spirit either by running or by cheering on family and friends who are in the race. Alliance of YWCAs of Massachusetts receives state funding for females at YWCAs across the state FY20 award has $200,000 increase B OSTON – YWCAs comprising the Alliance of YWCAs of Massachusetts received increased funding to provide gender-specific violence-prevention and leadership development programs for girls and women. The $650,000 budgeted for these nine YWCAs is a $200,000 increase over last year. “Because of the leadership of Senator Jason Lewis and Representative Marjorie Decker and the support of the entire delegation, this increase in funding will provide leadership and skill development to thousands of girls and young women across the Commonwealth,” said YWCA Malden Executive Director Peg Crowe. “Through direct programming at nine YWCAs, we are helping to lift up the next generation of female leaders.” Research shows that the more opportunities that girls have to experience leadership roles when they are young, the more likely it is that they will hold leadership positions once they enter the workforce. Yet the number of programs targeted towards girls decreases once they reach fourth grade.
