THE MALDEN ADVOCATE – Friday, August 2, 2019 Page 7 Lewis, Brodeur, Donato and Ultrino secure funding for Malden priorities in state budget B OSTON – State Sen. Jason Lewis and State Reps. Paul Brodeur, Paul Donato and Steven Ultrino are pleased that the recently passed state budget includes major investments in the City of Malden and its fiscal priorities. Under this budget, Malden will receive a total of $51,206,223 in Chapter 70 education funding this year, an increase of $1,908,454 over the last year’s budget. Crucially, the budget fully funds the state’s Special Education Circuit Breaker program, meaning that the program will reimburse districts for high special education costs up to the full 75 percent, as stipulated in statute. Acknowledging the unique budgetary impacts of charter school enrollment and tuition reimbursement on municipal budgets, the state budget allocates $115 million in order to ensure that the state meets its obligations to towns and cities to offset the fiscal impact of charter schools. For the first time in nearly 20 years, the budget will increase the Commonwealth’s contribution into the Community Preservation Act, which will ensure that over $36 million more will be distributed to projects in Malden and all across the Commonwealth and help raise the state’s match up to 30 percent for investments in open space, affordable housing and historic preservation. Malden’s legislative delegation fought successfully to secure funding for several additional local priorities, including: · $50,000 to establish and support a school-based health center, the Starr Center, at Malden High School · $50,000 for pedestrian safety improvements at the intersection of Glenwood, Grove, Washington and Winter streets · $100,000 allocated to Housing Families, Inc. to provide educational support programming to homeless children through the GREAT youth and families program · $50,000 to support social work wraparound services in Malden Public Schools · $50,000 to support the City in purchasing new public works equipment · $100,000 to fund pro bono legal services provided through Housing Families, Inc. · $100,000 to support the Lawnmower Tune-Up and Repairs • We repair all makes & models! • Authorized • FREE PICK-UP for all Tune-Ups! all m • We r d K-U makes & mo ma akes & mo D KU for all Tun UP fo 1039 Broadway, Revere • (781) 289-6466 Biker’s Outfitter (781) 289 , ee Award-Winning Landscaping Servicing the North Shore for over 38 Years (8) 89 www.bikersoutfitter.com Dealer ABCD mobile homeless outreach team “I’m proud that this year’s budget delivers record levels of funding to Malden for local schools and other municipal services,” said Lewis. “I’m particularly pleased that we were also able to secure funding for important local priorities like the school-based health center at Malden High, pedestrian safety improvements, support for vital area nonprofits and charities, and city-owned infrastructure and equipment.” “The FY'20 budget provides funding for many important ventures in Malden that will provide sufficient resources,” said Donato. “I appreciate all the hard work done by my colleagues to ensure that we continue to support much needed investments in critical areas.” Gov.
