Maldden alld a Vol. 30, No. 30 den AADD By Steve Freker I t was essentially a localized version of “The Little Engine That Could” when the notion of holding a Senior Prom for Malden High School’s Class of 2021, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, was first discussed earlier this year. The initial thoughts of “we think we can... we think we can... we think we can” soon evolved into “we KNOW we can... we KNOW we can...” as May approached. “Of all the traditions that were lost in the first year of the pandemic [2020], this was the one that last year’s senior class missed the most: Senior Prom,” Malden High Principal Chris Mastrangelo said. “It was the event we all wanted to bring back for this year’s graduating class.” Through the efforts and dedication of many, including dozens of hours of planning by both school department and city government leaders, call it “mission accomplished.” On the evening of Friday, May 28, more than 150 students and RESTAURANTS | SEE PAGE 9 Malden High School Principal Chris Mastrangelo (right) thanked Brittany Thompson of Evviva Trattoria in Malden Square and Joe Carreiro of El Potro Restaurant when they recently visited Malden High School, for their generosity in donating lots of food that was served at the Class of 2021 Senior Prom on May 28. I am especially excited to meet our students and families. For some background, I spent the last 26 years in the Boston Public Schools. As I make this move to MPS, my commitment will be to the well-being of our educators and students. I will take a deep look at our curriculum and determine where we need to begin revamping or revisiting our teaching and instructional practices to address cultural competency. We live in a world in which diversity is part of our DNA. We must respect, embrace, and learn from one another instead of using historical entitlements to create division. We want our students who are our present and future to have a voice while respecting and valuing the fact that we are one community of learners. We can agree to disagree in harmony as long as we respect ourselves and others.
