THE MALDEN ADVOCATE – Friday, June 28, 2019 Page 7 Malden’s third Filipino Festival packs house S tarted in 2017, Malden’s Third Annual Filipino Festival at the YMCA was even more jam-packed than the first two. The event was organized and coordinated by a former Malden resident, Kristine Bautista, from her home in Washington State. The annual event promotes and showcases the delicious food, arts and culture of Kristine’s native Philippines. Fellow Filipino and owner of Malden’s RE/MAX Trinity, Ronnie Puzon, again partnered with Kristine on the event. Host Marylaine Louise Viernes did a fabulous job keeping the event running smoothly. Joanna Chua, Malden resident and GenerMayor Gary Christenson with event organizer Kristine Bautista and host Marylaine Louise Viernes al Manager at Adz Group, led the support teams and volun(Courtesy Photos) teers to help on the day of the event. Nicole Baltazar, the Mayor’s Summer Youth Employment Program Supervisor, once again assisted with coordination and administrative efforts for the festival. The program opened with One of the traditional Filipino dances performed during Malden’s third Filipino Festival Award-Winning Landscaping Servicing the North Shore for over 38 Years the Filipino and American National Anthem and was followed by traditional performances of Philippine favorite dances and live music by Ashley Cortes, Rex Macapinlac, Mikiko Sato and Matteo Bautista. Muevelo Dance Studio and On Stage Dance Company also performed during the festival. Other activities included a Steamed Bun Contest, Brain Freeze Challenge and a Live Mural Demonstration by Anna Dugan of Annadidathing. Long lines at the food vendor booths revealed the enormous popularity of traditional Philippine cuisine. Local Filipino businesses and Malden organizations participated with booths promoting their businesses as did local artists and crafters who offered clothing, handbags, jewelry and more. Many local businesses contributed gift cards for the raffles. The Festival brought thousands of people from Malden and the Greater Boston community to celebrate the Filipino culture in our great community.
