Fact: The MRA has seen the developer’s proposal, but has at no time endorsed such a plan. In numerous internal conversations with the MRA Board of Directors and members of City government over the past few months, I have made it clear that this part of town known as Converse Square speaks to the city’s “strong past” as it sits as the gateway to an historic area that includes such magnificent structures as the Malden Public Library, Davenport Estates and the First Baptist Church. I have also cautioned that any changes to the look and feel of that area could have considerable impact on the community’s “proud future”. So we should tread very slowly. As the Executive Director of the MRA, I am the first to admit that this agency, while it has done a lot of great work in the community, has also made a few planning mistakes over its long history.
