THE MALDEN ADVOCATE–Friday, April 12, 2019 Page 13 MHS Golden Tornadoes Sports Shorts Malden's Smith sets school record in discus throw event in win over Somerville Malden High School senior throwing events star Shateya Smith led the Tornados to a 78-58 girls outdoor track win over Somerville with a recordsetting performance in the discus event. Smith, who already owns the girls shotput record in winter track, established a new Malden High mark in the discus throw, with a toss of 101 feet, 2 inches. The girls throwing events generated 27 points out of the 78 total numbers for Coach Jayson Payeur's girls’ squad. The Malden boys outdoor track team is still looking got its fi rst win under Coach Dave Londino. Both teams were on the road yesterday at Lynn English at the Lynn Manning Bowl. The boys and girls track teams will host Salem High on Tuesday, April 16 at 10:00 a.m. at Macdonald Stadium in Malden. *** Malden boys tennis opens Malden High girls’ lacrosse visits former teammate Leila Griege at Emmanuel season with 4-1 win over Triton The Malden boys’ tennis team, coached by Mark Gagnon, opened its regular season Thursday with a 4-1 victory over Triton Regional. Tornado boys’ tennis was back in action Thursday at North Reading and will return to action Wednesday, April 17 at 10:00 hosting Somerville at Amerige Park in Malden. The Tornado boys volleyball team sits at 1-1 overall with a 3-0 season opening win on the road over Madison Park and a 3-1 loss to Greater Lowell Tech on Wednesday. Boys’ volleyball is coached by Dan Jurkowski. *** Malden High girls’ lacrosse visits former teammate Leila Griege at Emmanuel Head coach Jess Leggett and the Malden High School girls’ lacrosse team visited freshman Leila Greige last night as Emmanuel College faced off against Regis College.
