THE MALDEN ADVOCATE–Friday, March 4, 2022 Page 5 COUNCIL | FROM PAGE 1 due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, has also been lifted so that the Councillors were also able to participate without wearing masks. At their fi rst in-person meeting of 2022, the Councillors also got a special treat when they were able to take a brief recess and review the informative and inspiring exhibit on display in the lobby of Malden City Hall outside the Council Chamber of a historical look at Black Women Suff ragists. The display was provided by the North Shore Juneteenth Association as part of their recent commemoration of Black History month. Maria Luise, Special Assistant to Mayor Gary Christenson, appeared and spoke at Tuesday's Council meeting and encouraged Councillors to inform their constituents of the display, so it could be viewed. The exhibit gives the Black Women Suff ragists both the recognition and the appreciation they deserve, she said. According to Malden city offi cials, during the 19th and 20th centuries, Black women played an active role in the struggle for universal suffrage, participating in political meetings and conventions where they strategized on obtaining the right to vote. "These heroes along with many others displayed incredible amounts of fortitude, resilience and courage and played an important role in getting both the Fifteenth and Nineteenth Amendments passed," according to a release from Mayor Christenson's offi ce. The exhibit will be on display through Monday, March 7 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Malden City Hall, 215 Pleasant St. **** Council approves salary transfers due to municipal job reclassifi cations The Malden City Council approved a series of funds transfers from the Salary Reserve Fund to cover some salary increases generated by municipal position reclassifi cations.
