The Golden Tornadoes squad then made it a perfect 3-0 start by topping next-door non-league rival Melrose on Monday. “We are off to a good start and we are continuing to get strong performances from a lot of different members of our team,” said first-year Malden head coach Jessica Bisson. “We have to keep putting in the effort in practice and look to keep improving.” Malden went to a perfect 2-0 in GBL play with a 95-75 win over Revere at the MHS Pool on Friday, Jan 3. Five different swimmers took first-place finishes in the win over Revere. The 400 freestyle relay team of Tony Luu, Abby Tang, Chloe Akombi and Tony Giech also took first place with a time of 4:09.52. Sophomore David Lombardi won two events: the 200 individual medley (2:09.54) and the 500 freestyle (5:52). Sophomore Tony Giech was a winner in the 100 breaststroke at 1:07.20. Nathan Nguyen won the 100 butterfly at 1:09.11. Malden tops Melrose in an 89-72 final at MHS Pool Sophomore David Lombardi and senior Haoxi Wang each won two events to lead Malden to an 89-72 win over Melrose. Lombardi won the 50 freestyle sprint at 23.41 seconds and also the 500 freestyle distance event, with a time of 5:42.5. He also contributed a leg to Malden’s winning the 200 freestyle relay, with a time of 1:43.19 turned in by Lombardi, Haoxi Wang, Nathan Nguyen and Tony Giech. Wang won the 100 freestyle (56.45 seconds) and 100 backstroke (1:00.56) and swam in the winning 200 freestyle relay. The Golden Tornadoes swept the relays on the day as the team also won the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:43.19 from Haoxi Wang, Tony Giech, Nathan Nguyen and David Lombardi. Nathan Nguyen won the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:08.68. Giech won the 100 breaststroke (1:07.89), and Chloe Akombi was a winner in the 200 individual medley (2:21.4). Other place winners against Melrose: Ryan Vasili (second, 2:14.73) and Abby Tang (third, 2:22.27) in the 200 freestyle; Tony Giech (second, 2:28.34) and Samantha Tang (third, 2:54.89) in the 200 individual medley; Chloe Akombi (second, 1:04.02), Abby Tang (third, 1:08.7) and Jacob Pettigrew (fourth, 1:18.04) in the 100 butterfly; Nathan Nguyen (second, 57.63 seconds) and Haoxi Wang (fourth, 56.45) in the 100 freestyle; Vasili (second, 6:24.76) in the 500 freestyle and Tony Luu (fifth); Tuong Nguyen (fourth) in the 100 backstroke (1:24.89) and Molly Sewell (fifth); Steven Leung (second) in the 100 breaststroke (1:18.91); and Samantha Tang (third, 1:29.34). The Malden swim team was back in action on Thursday at 4:00 p.m., hosting Medford in another GBL matchup at the Malden High School Pool.
