Evening events at the Malden Senior Community Center Opening Celebration – 6:00– 8:00 p.m.: This year’s (free) Opening Celebration will be held at the John & Christina Markey Senior Community Center and will feature live music, food samplings, community exhibit tables, readings and relevant presentations, and special activities, such as the featured Traveling Poetry Emporium, a team that travels with typewriters to type out an original poem composed just for you, on the spot, on a topic of your choice! Find out detailed information about the NEA Big Read: Malden and meet up with your fellow community members in a festive atmosphere. More details are on the Malden Reads website at maldenreads.org. True Story Theater – 8:00– 9:30 p.m.: This special ticketed event will be held in the auditorium of the John & Christina Markey Senior Community Center. With very little prep time, and a few props, the improvisational actors of True Story Theater take stories from the audience around a common theme and act them out. The results are magical! This Cambridge-based group – whose mission is “to build empathy, respect, and understanding across differences that divide us, through the honoring of true life stories” – will be focusing on themes from Ray Bradbury’s “Fahrenheit 451” as they invite the audience to take part. (Caution: their performances are deeply touching and funny and may cause uncontrollable laughter or tears!) The $10 tickets are limited, so please purchase through Eventbrite. More information is on the Malden Reads website at maldenreads.org. For more information The NEA Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest. The mission of the NEA Big Read is “to broaden our understanding of our world, our communities, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book.” “Malden Reads: One City, One Book” has received a grant from the NEA Big Read to host a program for the Malden Reads 10th anniversary year in 2020.
