Page 2 THE EVERETT ADVOCATE – FRiDAy, DECEmbER 16, 2022 City and MBTA offi cials assess the feasibility of bringing the Silver Line to Everett By Tara Vocino pproximately 44 people attended Tuesday’s virtual meeting to assess the feasibility, utility and cost of extending the Silver Line into Everett. According to MassDOT A Project Manager Doug Johnson, out of 141 panelists, they were least likely to use Alternative 1 to Malden Center by Ferry Street; Alternate 2 – Wellington by Route 16 and Sullivan by Broadway; and most likely to use Alternative 3 from Chelsea to Sullivan. “The five tier 2 goals are to expand mobility and access, advance equity, improve safety, support climate change and advance feasible and implementable solutions,” Johnson said. Project Team member Theresa Carr said that once alternates are at Broadway they branch out, and all alternatives will increase ridership. “We can make a high-quality investment, regardless of which alternative is chosen,” Carr said. “All alternatives provide great access to jobs, which is a reasonable 45-minute transit ride.” All alternatives have high ridership, especially to Malden Center and Sullivan, and improve safety for bicyclists and pedestrians. All alternatives perform well for transit critical populations, including people of color and low-income travelers. All connect upper Broadway in Everett with Boston, according to Carr. Ward 3 City Councillor Darren Costa asked them to take into consideration the large volume of traffic congestion when considering servicing Everett. “I believe having better and reliable service will lead to less cars on the street,” Costa said. “Approximately 70 percent of people rely on cars for transportation.” Another resident, who was only listed as Adam, said Glendale Square needs servicing. “Walking up and down Broadway is a large hill,” he said. “Many of my neighbors take public transit daily.” The next meeting will be held in early 2023. The $17,608.50 grant awarded to the Everett Fire Department will be used to purchase personal protective equipment and ballistic protection equipment. The program provides local fire departments with a variety of equipment that makes the dangerous job of firefighting safer. This is the third year that funding has been awarded for this purpose as part of a five-year, $25 million bond bill filed by the Baker-Polito Administration to support firefighter safety and health in the coming years. Fire departments in Massachusetts were able to apply to this program for 121 different types of eligible equipment: ballistic protective clothing, thermal protective clothing, gear washers and dryers, thermal imaging cameras, assorted hand tools and extrication equipment, communications resources, hazardous gas meters, fitness equipment and more. “Every time a firefighter goes to work, they could be asked to rescue a child from a burning building, clean up a spill of hazardous materials, treat a patient with a contagious medical condition, or rush into a hostile event to rescue and treat victims,” said State Fire Marshal Peter Ostroskey. “This program is absolutely vital to helping fire departments prepare for the vast array of hazards they face today and making sure that firefighters go home safe after every call.” ing skills to use with our drama coach! He denied “all the remaining allegations and states he is not a reporter and is not involved in reviewing, editing, or approving the Everett Leader Herald publications.” Unfortunately for the defendant, his emails speak to the contrary. As of this date, Matthew Philbin’s personal secretary, along with the newspaper’s bookkeeper, Mary Schovanec, who were also served subpoenas, like the Philbins, have refused to testify under oath. As an example of Philbin’s working relationship with Resnek, in a Feb. 26, 2019, email, Philbin instructs Resnek,” Gotta’ do a couple of rewrites, and go over a few things. But Fred is out…Not in print or on line.” Resnek replies in his email, “Got it. No Fred online or in print, my man. Just let me know what you want edited and we will be set. Nice looking paper. F@#K Carlo. F@#k him good. That front page is a killer.” Philbin also offered his political-artistic side when he was mulling publishing an attached cartoon in an email to Resnek mocking former President Donald Trump, where he’s dressed up as Santa carrying a sack with a man saying to a woman, “The Grinch is here early.” In a Dec. 16, 2019, email, Philbin writes to Resnek, “Let’s change it to Carlo.” In another email with an attached cartoon sent the same day, Philbin writes, “Put Carlo reading ‘The Everett Leader Herald’ Saying Where’s the Fake News when you want it,,,Maybe this is one for later date.” Given that it was the holiday season, Philbin’s emails continued to offer his “holiday spirit” toward his nemesis; in an email – once again attempting to mimic another political cartoon – he writes to Resnek, “OK, A Picture of Carlo and it says, He knows when you are donating…He knows when are not. He knows if you walk his dog, he knows if you shine his shoes he knows. We can go on and on here…it’s Christmas,” writes Philbin. The irony and the hate As Philbin and Resnek continued to publish their printed hate each week towards the mayor, Philbin took exception to one of Resnek’s editorials in an email dated August 17, 2020, writing to Resnek, “I wouldn’t run this…Makes Carlo look good…He’s trying to save the City money.” Delusions of grandeur Resnek, who attempted to publish a book about casino mogul Steve Wynn and his pursuit of the Class A Casino license in Everett, but was rebuffed by every credible publisher, offered up his “final proof” to Philbin and his cronies, former Metro newspaper publisher Russel Pergament, David O’Connor, current Communications Director for the Everett School Dept., Walt Pavlo, Jacob Resnek and James Mahoney, the newspaper’s designer. Resnek writes to Philbin, “This is but one comment of several just like it that I do not solicit. These attacks are brutal for him – and reach all the right places in addition. You and I share in any money from the book so hyping the book at Carlo’s expense is a win-win for us. Let’s see what happens.” Making it up as they went along If constantly publishing hateful lies about the mayor wasn’t enough, Philbin and Resnek thought falsely claiming the mayor as racist would help in their attempt to unseat the mayor in the 2021 election. Starting with false claims of racist hiring practices and writing false claims about security cameras in the school administration office on Vine Street that didn’t work despite claiming otherwise, Resnek and Philbin attempted to paint the city as racist week after week. In one of many emails showing how they schemed to do just that, Philbin wrote in an Oct. 13, 2020, email to Resnek, “‘Subject: Racism Commission,’ So Great Article…But ‘Systemic’ Everett’s Racism,,,that means the system set up is racists…Hmmm. The Mayor is a Racists NO DOUBT…(I believe he even hates himself),,,I also don’t believe Everett as a whole is Racist…I think the Mayors Hiring Practice maybe Racists.” The emails also show that Resnek couldn’t blow his nose without Philbin’s permission. Resnek had to send all his written articles to Philbin prior to publishing for his approval and editing. In a November 17, 2020, email, Resnek sends his “Eye on Everett” article to his boss for approval. “You think the mayor or his wife will like it?” asks Resnek. “Will wordsmith where necessary.” Philbin replies to Resnek, “Some wordsmithing needed. But other than that pretty funny…” Exploiting Covid Philbin also critiqued Resnek’s School Committee story that same day, writing to Resnek, “To the end you say SD… The school Dept. is TOO IMPORTANT to abbreviate. And let’s make sure that the people realize once again The Mayor and his Administration is taking the money away from Everett’s kids, their Future, this Education we are talking about. Basically the cost of flowers…” Philbin never let up, realizing their strategy to hurt the mayor during the pandemic needed to be used to their advantage. In a December 1, 2020, email from Philbin to Resnek, Elena Vega and James Mahoney, Philbin instructs his corrupt editor to place more emphasis on the crisis and effects – and still blame the mayor: “Hmmm…maybe these Pols and the Mayor don’t really understand the crisis and effects on the everyday citizen BECAUSE they The Mayor Especially didn’t take a pay cut did he? Did he still expect his raise? Oh of course because that is part of it. He is so out of touch with the everyday schmuck that lost hours, lost pay, lost their jobs. And quite possibly lost their homes…” Makes you wonder how much money the Philbins were losing – probably not much given their many real estate holdings and marijuana business. Many residents gathered with their friends and neighbors to enjoy the special evening together. Some residents couldn’t resist the urge to dance to the holiday tunes. ~ Guest Commentary ~ The 8/10 Bar and Grille Won’t Feel the Same Without Richie By Sal Giarratani S everal years back after moving to East Boston, I discovered the 8/10 Bar and Grille located at 810 Norwood St. just outside Everett Square and met up with Richie Sasso. Always found him to be a friendly guy and gracious, too. I ended up being a regular at this joint with my friends Johnny 2 Dog from Eastie and Richie Polito plus Robio Lunetta – Eastie homeboys who ended up in next door Revere. Probably ate there twice a week but especially on Fridays because it was always Fish Day at the 8/10 on Fridays. Best fish ever. Large portions, great tasting food and the price is always just right. When I heard that Richie fought his good fight against diabetes for as long as he could, it was sad to hear that “Sugar” finally got him and he was only 62 years old. I have the “Sugar,” which is why I gave up fried fish there and replaced it with a great plate of broiled fish, which is always the best ever at the 8/10, of course, on Friday nights. Richie had owned and operated this restaurant for 16 years and passed away right after Thanksgiving Day. He was always a hard worker and knew what it took to build up a successful business. I was glad to see that the Everett City Council honored Richie’s memory at its recent Council hearing. It was a good gesture from council members. Surely, it was of great comfort to his family, many friends and all his regular customers, like me. I returned to the 8/10 last Friday evening, December 2 because I wanted to return to say my goodbye to Richie, too and, of course, have another plate of broiled fish, too. I spoke with a few of the regular customers in the dining area near me and we spoke with sadness on the passing of Richie. It had been a while since I dined at Richie’s place. I often dined there with many friends, but when Johnny 2 Dog and Richie Polito both passed away over the past couple of years, it didn’t feel the same without pigging out on some great dishes in a great place without them. I returned to honor Richie, and I am sure I will return again and again because this is my favorite spot in Everett to dine out with new friends or even by myself. Richie Sasso, R.I.P. Therese DiMuzio sang holiday songs to the residents. Ray Cavicchio performed on his “Cavichord.”

Page 22 THE EVERETT ADVOCATE – FRiDAy, DECEmbER 16, 2022 Tide girls romp over Revere in home opener Everett girls basketball hosts malden Tuesday night after medford tilt By Joe McConnell he Everett High School girls’ basketball team began the 2022-23 campaign on a successful note after they defeated Revere in the home opener Tuesday night, 46-28. Coach Riley Dunn’s club was 4-16 last year. “It was a rebuilding year for us, but the girls fought hard in every game,” the coach said. And it looks like they are ready to take that next T step after their convincing triumph over the Patriots earlier this week. Senior Kayley Rossi and junior Kaesta Sandy are the captains on this year’s varsity squad. They are both returning players on the big club. Sophomore Emilia Maria-Babcock, senior Nehemie Lucien, senior Lamiah Wyzard and senior Japhnie Pierre are the other varsity returnees that give the coaching staff optimism to secure a winning record this season. But they are also excited about the varsity newcomers. “I’m very excited about our new wave of varsity players like junior Malaica Guilaume, junior Taisha Alexandre, juniors Gleidy Tejada, senior Tatiana Moran, senior Brooklyn Acevedo, senior Tanaeja Elie, senior Nehemie Joseph, junior Olivia Lavaud and junior Malica Guilaume,” Dunn said. “We have a great group of returning girls, and our new additions are all hard workers,” the coach added. “We are really emphasizing competing every time we are on the court this season. We are looking to be quick on offense, and a force on defense.” Dunn was really proud of the effort and hustle her girls displayed versus Revere in the home opener again on Tuesday night. “They fought hard the entire game, while keeping their composure,” she added. “It was a great team win.” Next up for the Tide after the win over Revere was Medford on Dec. 15, and then the Malden Golden Tornadoes make the trek to Everett on Tuesday, Dec. 20, for a game starting at 7 p.m. Following that contest, the Everett girls are scheduled to take on non-league host Lawrence on Wednesday, Dec. 29, at 11:30 a.m. The Greater Boston League (GBL) season resumes on Jan. 3 versus host Chelsea, starting at 4 p.m. Tide begins season with overtime win at Revere Everett boys’ basketball heads to malden Tuesday after taking on host medford Dec. 15 By Joe McConnell I f Tuesday night’s game against host Revere is any indication of what’s to come, the Everett High School boys’ basketball games should provide much excitement for the team’s fans followed by many wins throughout the course of the regular season. The opening night game went to overtime, before visiting Everett was able to outlast the Patriots, 63-60. The score was tied at 57 at the end of regulation. “This was a good way to begin a new season,” said Everett coach Stanley Chamblain, who is beginning his fifth year as the Tide’s top boss after serving as an assistant coach for the previous five seasons. “It was a good, competitive battle, but Revere coach Dave O’Leary always has his players ready to play. “We led by as many as 15 points, but Revere started to hit its shots, while fighting hard to get back into the game,” added Chamblain. “We showed our inexperience at times, and also had the usual first game jitters, but in the end, we were able to stay level-headed to pull out the win.” The Crimson Tide only has three players with any type of varsity experience on the roster this year, but the overall resiliency of the team was the deciding factor to push them over the top. “I was very happy to see how they fought their way back, when Revere started to chip away at our lead,” said Chamblain. Steven Cordero paced the offensive attack for the Tide with 21 points. Dave De Souza was next in line with 15 points, including four in the extra period to help lead his teammates to victory. “{De Souza} had a chance to win the game in regulation, but was able to bounce back nicely in overtime,” said Chamblain. Tide boys co-op hockey grounds the Jets to open season on convincing note Everett faces Lynn again in the home opener on Dec. 21 at 4 p.m. By Joe McConnell T he Everett boys’ co-op hockey team kicked off the coach Craig Richards era on a successful note with a convincing 8-1 win over the Lynn Jets at Lynn’s Connery Rink last Saturday. The Crimson Tide led, 3-0 after one period, and 6-0 after two. “The kids showed up to play, and played hard throughout the entire game,” said Richards afterwards. Everett’s David Saia and Revere’s Ollie Svenson paced the offensive attack with two goals apiece. Revere freshman Frankie Annunzita lit the lamp once, along with sophomore Liam Thompson (Mystic Valley), senior Chris Cecca (Revere) and Jacob Cantone (Everett). Sophomore goalie Ben Rosa (Malden) made 15 saves to help lead his teammates to victory, while the Tide peppered the Malden net with 35 shots. “We played very well on Saturday,” said Richards. The Everett co-op boys took on Medford at Medford’s LoConte Rink on Dec. 15 after press deadline. It’s a game that always provides a challenge for most Greater Boston League (GBL) teams. The Mustangs consistently have strong clubs that routinely make the state tournament. But Richards’ young club was hoping to continue their fine showing from the Lynn game to give the Mustangs a battle in order to send a message that they are ready to compete on this level. Everett will then host Lynn in a rematch on Wednesday, Dec. 21, at 4 p.m., before facing off against host Somerville two weeks later on Wednesday, Jan. 4, starting at 5:30 p.m. Kevin Ruiz accounted for 14 points. Junior Anderson Joseph chipped in with seven. His classmates Allisn Desruisseaux and Cleevance Erilus had four and two points, respectively. The Everett boys were scheduled to take on host Medford on Dec. 15, before facing the Golden Tornadoes in Malden on Tuesday, Dec. 20, starting at 6 p.m. They will then participate in the annual BABC (Boston Amateur Basketball Club) Winter Tournament at Cathedral High School on Dec. 27 and 28. The Tide will face BC High at noon on Dec. 27, and then Jeremiah Burke High School the next day at the same time. Brookline, Springfield Central and host Cathedral are the other teams in this year’s tourney. Each team is guaranteed two games, except for the host club, and there won’t be any championship and consolation games. The tournament is designed to keep these squads sharp over the holiday break. Chamblain’s team will resume the Greater Boston League (GBL) schedule against Chelsea in the home opener on Jan. 3, beginning at 7 p.m. Middlesex Sheriff’s Office hiring correction officers, medical personnel Offering sign-on bonuses for new officers, nurses and paramedics BILLERICA, Mass. – The Middlesex Sheriff’s Office (MSO) is actively recruiting correction officers and medical personnel to join one of the nation’s leading correctional agencies. As the 2021 election neared, Philbin appeared to be under pressure to attack the mayor any way he could through his newspaper. In a February 13, 2021, email, Philbin asked Resnek to have a brainstorm session to discuss “Leader Branding” where Resnek wants to sell t-shirts on the internet that would read “Dump Carlo or Leave $$$ for Everett” or “I’m Not with Carlo.” Philbin writes, “Like his Face and Trumps face and Hitler all on the front. And the testimony of Philbin’s former vice president of operations, Elena Vega, who witnessed many a draft of the articles and edits between Resnek and Philbin, stated that the Leader Herald wasn’t a legitimate newspaper – to Vega, it was all about attacking the mayor of Everett. from the Chelsea MBTA station, which off ers access to the Silver Line and Commuter Rail. ANSWERS The Primary Residence, Married Couples and Masshealth I n Massachusetts, as long as one spouse continues to live in the primary residence, the home will not be a countable asset for MassHealth eligibility purposes, regardless of its value. Furthermore, MassHealth cannot file a lien against the property as long as one spouse remains living in the home. Beginning in 2023, the maximum equity in a single person’s home can be up to $1,033,000. If the equity is over that amount, the home will be a countable asset for Medicaid eligibility. PO Box 490407, Everett, MA 02149 If one spouse becomes eligible for MassHealth and the home is owned jointly, the home should be transferred to the spouse who is still living at home. The at home spouse could then transfer the home to an irrevocable Trust in order to commence the five-year look back period in the event the at home spouse subsequently ends up transitioning to a nursing home. The Trust would also serve to avoid probate in the event the at home spouse dies. If the house is not transferred to such a Trust and the at home spouse unexpectedly dies without having changed title to the deed, then the house would revert back to the spouse in the nursing home only to be subject to the estate recovery lien by MassHealth upon that spouse’s death. Therefore, continued joint ownership in situations like this is not a viable long-term option when one spouse is in a nursing home. Transfers between spouses are not disqualifying transfers and, consequently, are not subject to the five-year look back period. The subsequent transfer to the irrevocable Trust should only be completed after the nursing home spouse is approved for MassHealth benefits. Otherwise, the transfer taking place prior to such approval would be considered a disqualifying transfer. The transfer of the home from the nursing home spouse to the at home spouse can even take place prior to MassHealth approval. That will have no effect on the MassHealth application. The at home spouse will still have the right to use, occupy and possess the home while it is being held in the irrevocable Trust. If the at home spouse were to die, the Trust terms would be followed and most likely the home would be distributed free of all Trusts to the children in equal shares. The children would receive a cost basis in the home equal to the fair market value of the home at the time of the at home spouse’s death. If the home were to be sold shortly thereafter, in all likelihood, no capital gains tax would be paid. No Massachusetts estate tax would be paid if the total value of the at home spouse’s estate is less than $1million. I’m still waiting for the Massachusetts legislature to at least increase the exemption to $2million. New Hampshire has no estate tax. Maine will be exempting up to $6million the start of the year. Connecticut’s current estate tax is not assessed until the estate is valued over 9.1million. Just a few examples. Joseph D.
