All members are appointed for a two-year term. Supporters note that the council, which in total has members who speak 14 different languages, has geographic, racial and gender diversity and includes members of the LGBTQ+ community. “Since swearing the council in, these young people have been hard at work,” said Gov. Healey. “They’ve shown incredible leadership, and they’ve made it a priority to engage with each other about the issues that matter most to them. Each of them recognizes that the decisions we make today will have a significant impact on their futures, and our administration is committed to working with them to address their concerns. While we work to ensure Massachusetts remains a state they can grow and thrive in, we’re excited to welcome these young people to the Statehouse and open the door to conversations about their futures.” OW LONG WAS LAST WEEK’S SESSION? Beacon Hill Roll Call tracks the length of time that the House and Senate were in session each week. Many legislators say that legislative sessions are only one aspect of the Legislature’s job and that a lot of important work is done outside of the House and Senate chambers. They note that their jobs also involve committee work, research, constituent work and other matters that are important to their districts. Critics say that the Legislature does not meet regularly or long enough to debate and vote in public view on the thousands of pieces of legislation that have been filed. They note that the infrequency and brief length of sessions are misguided and lead to irresponsible late-night sessions and a mad rush to act on dozens of bills in the days immediately preceding the end of an annual session.
