THE EVERETT ADVOCATE – FRiDAy, OCTObER 23, 2026 Page 15 The fi rst game against host Somerville at Dilboy Stadium on Oct. 13 went the Highlanders way, 3-0. “We started off well, moving the ball and creating chances that were very close to scoring a goal, but the Somerville defense was able to clear those opportunities away,” said coach Rodney Landaverde. “Unfortunately, after that, we didn’t stay disciplined on defense, and it resulted in two easy goals for Somerville before halftime. We did our best to attack in the second half, but when Somerville added that third goal, it clinched the win for them.” Two days later, the Tide came Everett’s Jamauri Dulin on the carry against Revere. SPORTS | FROM PAGE 11 a taste of postseason soccer. The last time that the program went to the playoff s was under the old format back in 2010. I was just graduating from college that year. I was not even a coach. I was a senior on the UMass / Boston team.” But Persuitte is more thrilled for his players on this year’s team, not to mention the program as a whole. “Going to the postseason means the world to them. It shows that we have grown from nothing to a contender, and it will hopefully showcase our playing style, while also representing the school to the rest of the state,” the coach said. “(To make it this far), It shows that the girls have put (their heart and soul into this season), and our record refl ects that.” After losing to host Chelsea on Sept. 15, 4-2, the Tide girls went on to win six straight games that included three shutouts. “They have worked so hard and have sacrificed so much, and the reward for this is fi nally taking the program to this point,” said Persuitte. “I believe once the girls get a taste of the postseason, they will fi nally realize why I pushed them so hard. I only want the best for them, and (right now) I’m incredibly proud of each player. They deserve this more than anything.” But there’s still a regular season to be concerned about, and on Oct. 13 at Veterans Memorial Stadium, the Tide dropped a heartbreaker to Somerville, 1-0. “It was one of the best games that we have played as a team so far this year,” Persuitte said. “Even though we lost, we still played incredibly well. Somerville is a very tough, (veteran) team. We always have to change our tactics, when playing them. However, in doing so, we kept them guessing our game plan.” Sofia Arana-Quintanilla played lights out on defense to keep the Somerville attack at bay, according to Persuitte, while adding that “the rest of the team echoed Sofi a’s play, and as a result I can’t single out just one person. It literally was a team eff ort.” Two days later, the Everett girls played host Malden to a scoreless tie. “Both teams put in a good overall effort,” said Persuitte. “We had a few opportunities to score, but did not capitalize on them. It was a game for the defense on both sides; hard-fought from start to fi nish. Odilas Sandoval had the best opportunity to score, but her shot hit the far post, and bounced out.” The coach went on to say that Brianna Santos played well, along with Sofi a Arana-Quintanilla and Gissell Lemus. Goalie Julianna Rivera recorded another shutout to add to her growing total of seven this season. The coach praised the eff orts of Sandoval, who did a phenomenal job shutting down Malden’s fastest player with good, solid defense. She also had help from Mel Ribeiro and the rest of her defensive teamOffered at $529,900 SAUGUS OPEN HOUSE: Sat., Oct., 23 & Sun., Oct. 24 - 12:00 – 2:00 Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Commonwealth Real Estate Formerly Carpenito Real Estate mates, while Jasmine Morias played well off the bench. They dropped all three games, including two against Somerville, while being outscored, 7-0. But they did have a nice bounce back win at Medford Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 20, beating the Mustangs, 3-0. Diego Teixeira was in the Everett net, and before you knew it, he came up with fi ve saves right away in the fi rst half to keep the game scoreless. “Malden came out very eager in the second half, and was able to bypass our defensive line, which eventually accounted for its two goals that was too much for us to overcome,” said Landaverde. “But the boys still fought hard until the end, looking to at least break the shutout.” It was then time to take on Somerville again, this time at Veterans Memorial Stadium last Friday afternoon. “There were many tired legs, but we were still hungry for offense in the fi rst 20 minutes of the game, which resulted in two scoring chances that could Home of the Week SAUGUS – Welcome to 40 Stone Street.
